William Andersen III
William Andersen III is a former politician in Labrador, Canada. He represented Torngat Mountains in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1993 to 1996. The son of Andrew Andersen and Christiana Lampe, he was born in Okkak Bay, Labrador. Andersen married Jan Woodford. He was a wildlife officer from 1979 to 1984. Andersen served as mayor of Nain from 1978 to 1984. He was president of the Labrador Inuit Association from 1984 to 1993. He was elected to the provincial assembly in 1993, winning by only three votes after a judicial recount. Andersen did not run for reelection in 1996. Torngat Mountains (electoral District)
Torngat Mountains is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 there are 2,130 eligible voters living within the district. The district takes its name from the Torngat Mountains. Progressive Conservative Lela Evans was elected as the Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) for this district in the 2019 general election defeating Liberal incumbent Randy Edmunds. Evans was re-elected in 2021. On October 25, 2021, Evans left the PC Party to sit as an Independent in the House of Assembly. On March 7, 2022, Evans joined the NDP. The district contains a large indigenous population, including the Inuit self-governing territory of Nunatsiavut, as well as the Naskapi community of Natuashish which is a federal reserve. The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Nain, Newfoundland And Labrador
Nain (Inuit language: ''Nunainguk'') is the northernmost permanent settlement in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, within the Nunatsiavut region, located about by air from Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The town was established as a Moravian mission in 1771 by Jens Haven and other missionaries. As of 2021, the population is 1,204 mostly Inuit and mixed Inuit-European. Nain is the administrative capital of the autonomous region of Nunatsiavut. Nain is inaccessible by road and may be reached only by air or sea. Nunatsiavut
Nunatsiavut (; iu, italics=no, ᓄᓇᑦᓯᐊᕗᑦ) is an Autonomous administrative division, autonomous area claimed by the Inuit in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The settlement area includes territory in Labrador extending to the Quebec border. In 2002, the Labrador Inuit Association submitted a proposal for limited autonomy to the government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The constitution was ratified on December 1, 2005, at which time the Labrador Inuit Association ceased to exist, and the new Government of Nunatsiavut was established, initially being responsible for health, education and cultural affairs. It is also responsible for setting and conducting elections, the first of which was executed in October 2006. An election for the ordinary members of the Nunatsiavut Assembly was held on May 4, 2010.
