William Allen (National Liberal Politician)
William Allen (1870 – 11 September 1945) was a politician in Britain who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1892 to 1900, and – after a gap of more than thirty years – from 1931 to 1935. Allen was the son of William Shepherd Allen, also an MP. He first entered the House of Commons at the 1892 general election. Aged only 22, he was elected as the Liberal Party MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, defeating the incumbent Liberal Unionist MP, Douglas Coghill. He was re-elected at the 1895 election, but was defeated at the 1900 general election. This was on account of his active service in the Second Boer War. He did not seek election again until the 1924 general election, when he stood as a Constitutionalist candidate in the Burslem constituency. In 1924, Constitutionalist candidates were either Unionist or Liberal candidates who were supported by both local party associations. Alfred Seale Haslam
Sir Alfred Seale Haslam (27 October 1844 – 13 January 1927) was an English engineer who was Mayor of Derby from 1890 to 1891, three times Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for Newcastle-under-Lyme (UK Parliament constituency), Newcastle-under-Lyme from 1900 to 1906. He had made his money from devising a refrigeration plant that could be used to transport food in ships worldwide. At one time he owned and lived at Breadsall Priory in Derbyshire. His son Eric Seale Haslam was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1937. Life Alfred Seale Haslam was the fourth son of William Haslam, an iron-founder. Woodhead Hall
Woodhead Hall is a country house at Cheadle in Staffordshire. It is a Grade II listed building. History Woodhead Hall was originally commissioned by a Mr Leigh and completed in 1720. It was acquired by William Allen, a merchant, in the 1840s and completely rebuilt by William Shepherd Allen to the designs of William Sugden in 1873. It remained in the Allen family, passing to William Allen in 1915, until it became a preparatory school in 1925. At the start of the Second World War it became RAF Cheadle and, as a Y-station, started monitoring important enemy signals information. The main task was to intercept messages from German bombers and ground stations. The hall continued as a monitoring station during the Cold War, with operations transferring to become part of Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in January 1964 when all ministries' civilian interception sites came under its control. 1935 United Kingdom General Election
The 1935 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 14 November 1935 and resulted in a large, albeit reduced, majority for the National Government now led by Stanley Baldwin of the Conservative Party. The greatest number of members, as before, were Conservatives, while the National Liberal vote held steady. The much smaller National Labour vote also held steady but the resurgence in the main Labour vote caused over a third of their MPs, including National Labour leader Ramsay MacDonald, to lose their seats. Labour, under what was then regarded internally as the caretaker leadership of Clement Attlee following the resignation of George Lansbury slightly over a month before, made large gains over their very poor showing at the 1931 general election, and saw their highest share of the vote yet.
