William Aikman (writer)
William Aikman (1824–1909) was an American writer and pastor. Biography Aikman was born in New York City, on August 12, 1824, son of Robert and Sarah (Smith) Aikman. He was graduated at the University of the City of New York in 1846, and attended the Union Theological Seminary, from 1846 to 1849. He served as pastor of various Presbyterian churches, serving that at Atlantic City, New Jersey, from 1883. According to his work ''The Future of the Colored Race in America'', he was pastor of the Hanover Street Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware, where he ministered for eleven years from June 2, 1857. Aikman was moderator of the synod of Pennsylvania in 1863, also a trustee of Wells female college, from 1878 to 1882. He received the degree D.D. from the University of the City of New York in 1869. A Doctor of Divinity (D.D. or DDiv; la, Doctor Divinitatis) is the holder of an advanced academic degree in divinity. In the United Kingdom, it is considered an advanced doctoral degree. Wells College
Wells College is a private liberal arts college in Aurora, New York. The college has cross-enrollment with Cornell University and Ithaca College. For much of its history it was a women's college. Wells College is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is within the Aurora Village–Wells College Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The college has an average student body of 450 and a student to faculty ratio of 9:1. It has five residence halls and seven academic buildings. History Wells was established as a women's college in 1868 by Henry Wells, co-founder of Wells Fargo and the American Express Company. Wells had the building for Wells Seminary constructed on property he donated. On August 9, 1888, the college's main building burned to the ground.
