William A. Holohan
William Andrew Holohan (July 1, 1928 – July 23, 2010) was a justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, serving from 1972 until his retirement in 1989. Holohan served as chief justice from 1982 to 1987. Holohan served as an Assistant United States Attorney to then–United States Attorney Jack D. H. Hays. Holohan was considered conservative in his legal and political views but progressive in judicial reform. In 1988, Holohan wrote the opinion of the court in ''Green v. Osborne'', a 4–1 decision that canceled a recall election for Evan Mecham because Mecham already had been impeached and removed as governor." Arizona Supreme Court
The Arizona Supreme Court is the state supreme court of the U.S. state of Arizona. Sitting in the Supreme Court building in downtown Phoenix, the court consists of a chief justice, a vice chief justice, and five associate justices. Each justice is appointed by the governor of Arizona from a list recommended by a bipartisan commission. Justices stand for retention in an election two years after their appointment and then every six years. They must retire at age 70. Court history The court started in 1912 with 3 justices. Alfred Franklin, Donald L. Cunningham, and Henry D. Ross took office on February 14, 1912 (Valentine's Day). In 1949, the Court expanded from 3 to 5 justices and from 5 to 7 justices in 2016. Turf Paradise is a thoroughbred and quarter horse racetrack located at 19th Avenue and Bell Road, in the Deer Valley section of Phoenix, Arizona in the United States. It opened in 1956. It is owned and operated by local entrepreneur Jerry Simms. Turf Paradise is typically open for racing from early November through April. It is widely known as the home of the Turf Paradise Derby in February, an official prep race for the Kentucky Derby. History In 1954 businessman Walter Cluer, a successful millwork company founder and manufacturer from Phoenix, purchased of barren desert at what is now Bell Road and 19th Avenue. Cluer, who was also a horse owner, dreamt of building a first-class race track in Phoenix. Evan Mecham
Evan Mecham ( ; May 12, 1924 – February 21, 2008) was an American businessman and the 17th governor of Arizona, serving from January 5, 1987, until his impeachment conviction on April 4, 1988. A decorated veteran of World War II, Mecham was a successful automotive dealership owner and occasional newspaper publisher. Periodic runs for political office earned him a reputation as a perennial candidate along with the nickname of "The Harold Stassen of Arizona" before he was elected governor, under the Republican banner. Peoria is a city in Maricopa and Yavapai counties in the state of Arizona. Most of the city is located in Maricopa County, while a portion in the north is in Yavapai County.
