William A. Hall House
The William A. Hall House is a historic house at 1 Hapgood Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Built in 1890–92, it is one of Vermont's finest early expressions of Colonial Revival architecture. It is notable for its first three residents, who all played prominent roles in the major businesses of Bellows Falls, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is now the Readmore Inn. Description and history The Hall House is located a short way south of downtown Bellows Falls, at the northwest corner of Westminster and Hapgood Streets. It is a large, rectangular wood-frame structure, three stories in height, with a dormered hip roof, clapboard siding, and a granite foundation. A single-story porch extends across the front and wraps around to the left side, with a turned balustrade and Tuscan columns. Bellows Falls, Vermont
Bellows Falls is an incorporated village located in the town of Rockingham in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,747 at the 2020 census. Bellows Falls is home to the Green Mountain Railroad, a heritage railroad; the annual Roots on the River Festival; and the No Film Film Festival. History The community was settled in 1753 by colonists of English descent, who called it Great Falls. Later the settlers renamed the town for Colonel Benjamin Bellows, a landowner, but kept the name Great Falls for the waterfall, a translation of their Abenaki name, "Kitchee pontegu." In 1785, Colonel Enoch Hale built at the falls the first bridge over the Connecticut River. It was the only bridge across the river until 1796, when another was built at Springfield, Massachusetts. The Bellows Falls Neighborhood Historic District encompasses a residential area of the village of Bellows Falls, Vermont. Located south of downtown Bellows Falls, the area has one of the largest concentrations of well-preserved 19th century residences in southern Vermont. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, and enlarged in 2007. Description and history Bellows Falls is an incorporated village within the municipality of Rockingham in southeastern Vermont. It is located on the west bank of the Connecticut River, and was the site at which that river was first bridged, in 1785. As a consequence, the village has since then been a transportation hub, as a nexus of water, road, and railroad routes formed there over the course of the 19th century.
