Willa Vasquez Serfaty
Willa Vasquez Serfaty is a Gibraltarian artist. Biography She was born in Gibraltar in 1954 into an artistic family, from an early age Willa became a pupil of local artist Leni Mifsud, one of the few women artists who were making their mark in painting. Later on she studied drawing at the Academia Marqués de Cuba in Madrid. She had her first joint exhibition at the age of 18 with her sisters in Gibraltar followed by another one the following year in London, at the Kings Gallery in Hampstead, after that Willa spent some time in Florence, Italy learning new techniques. Since then Willa has been a prominent figure in the art world in Gibraltar, she has had a number of very successful exhibitions and has also exhibited in a plethora of collective exhibitions both in Gibraltar and Spain. Her work was chosen for a collection of works by artists of the Campo de Gibraltar held in the Spanish institute in Manhattan, New York, which subsequently toured various cities within the United ... The Gibraltarians ( Spanish: ''gibraltareños'', colloquially: '' llanitos'') are an ethnic group native to Gibraltar, a British overseas territory located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. Origins Some Gibraltarians are a racial and cultural mixture of the many immigrants who came to the Rock of Gibraltar over 300 years. Following its capture by an Anglo-Dutch force in 1704, all but 70 of the existing inhabitants of Gibraltar elected to leave with many settling nearby. Since then, immigrants from Britain, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Morocco, Menorca, and India have settled at Gibraltar, as have Sephardic Jews from North Africa. Grand Casemates Square
Grand Casemates Square (colloquially Casemates Square or Casemates) is the larger of the two main squares within the city centre of Gibraltar (the other being John Mackintosh Square). The square takes its name from the British-built Grand Casemates, a casemate and bombproof barracks at the northern end of the square completed in 1817. Located at the northern end of Main Street, the square is lined with numerous pubs, bars and restaurants and acts as the gateway into Gibraltar's city centre for most tourists. The ''Gibraltar Chronicle'' is a national newspaper published in Gibraltar since 1801. It became a daily in 1821. It is Gibraltar's oldest established daily newspaper and the world's second oldest English language newspaper to have been in print continuously. Its editorial offices are at Watergate House, and the print works are in the New Harbours industrial estate. History The ''Gibraltar Chronicle'' was born in direct relationship with the garrison. Casualty lists and news were slow in the 18th century and when five regiments from the Garrison of Gibraltar were promptly shipped to Egypt in 1801, the news was posted on a notice board in the Gibraltar Garrison Library.
