Will H. Daly
Will H. Daly (May 25, 1869 – March 23, 1924) was a Portland, Oregon, labor leader, progressive politician and businessman. He was the first person to head both the Oregon State Federation of Labor and the Central Labor Council of Portland. He was also the first labor leader to serve on the Portland City Council, but was unsuccessful in a mayoral bid, largely due to a vigorous campaign to discredit him by ''The Oregonian,'' the city's largest newspaper. He was active in the People's Power League. Daly was also a supporter of the single tax schemes advocated by followers of the popular political economist Henry George. ''The Oregon Journal'' was Portland, Oregon's daily afternoon newspaper from 1902 to 1982. The ''Journal'' was founded in Portland by C. S. "Sam" Jackson, publisher of Pendleton, Oregon's ''East Oregonian'' newspaper, after a group of Portlanders convinced Jackson to help in the reorganization of the ''Portland Evening Journal.'' George Luis Baker
George Luis Baker (1868–1941) was an American businessman and politician who served as mayor of Portland, Oregon, from 1917 to 1933. Baker was born in The Dalles and attended school in California. Working in the theatrical business, Baker started the Baker Stock Company at the Baker Theater at Third and Yamhill Streets in Portland. He spent nine years as a member of the city council and two years as Commissioner of Public Affairs before being elected mayor. Baker openly drank alcohol during Oregon's Prohibition, a time when he was both the mayor and the enforcer of the laws. He and the Portland Police Bureau took control of liquor distribution (through bootlegging) and kept speakeasies open. Baker's campaign finance violations and charges of immorality at the raucous 1918 Oregon Auto Dealers' Convention were both brought in front of a grand jury, who declined to indict him. The Pittock Mansion is a French Renaissance-style château in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon, United States. The mansion was originally built in 1914 as a private home for London-born '' Oregonian'' publisher Henry Pittock and his wife, Georgiana Burton Pittock. It is a 46-room estate built of Tenino Sandstone situated on that is now owned by the city's Bureau of Parks and Recreation and open for touring. Henry Lewis Pittock (March 1, 1835 – January 28, 1919) was an English-born American pioneer, publisher, newspaper editor, and wood and paper magnate.
