Wilkinson Township is a township in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 270 as of the 2000 census. Wilkinson Township is named after Major Melville Wilkinson of the 3rd Regiment United States Infantry, who was killed during the Battle of Sugar Point. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.0 square miles (93.3 km), of which 30.7 square miles (79.5 km) is land and 5.3 square miles (13.8 km) (14.76%) is water. Much of the township is forested. Portions of the township are within the boundaries of the Chippewa National Forest, Bowstring State Forest, and Welsh Lake State Forest. Chippewa National Forest
Chippewa National Forest is a National Forest located in north central Minnesota, United States, in the counties of Itasca, Cass and Beltrami. Forest headquarters are located in Cass Lake, Minnesota. There are local ranger district offices in Blackduck, Deer River and Walker. History The Forest was established as the Minnesota Forest Reserve on 27 June 1902, with passage of the Morris Act. While this act mainly addressed the disposition of unallotted lands on Ojibwe Indian reservations in Minnesota, of the Chippewas of the Mississippi, Cass Lake, Leech Lake, and Winnibigoshish Indian reservations were designated as a Forest Reserve. Led by Maria Sanford and Florence Bramhall of the Federation of Minnesota Women's Clubs, conservation activism beginning in 1900 brought the forest and potential threats to wide public attention. Minnesota State Highway 371 (MN 371) is a highway in central and north-central Minnesota. The route connects Minnesota's northern lakes region with the central part of the state. It runs south–north from U.S. Highway 10 (US 10) in Little Falls to US 2 in Cass Lake. MN 371 has become a heavily traveled arterial route that was once a two-lane roadway over almost all of its length, but has been widened to four lanes across most of its southern half.
