Wilbur Simpson
Wilbur H. Simpson (December 6, 1917 in Angola, Indiana – June 17, 1997 in Platte Lake, Michigan) was an American classical bassoonist and pedagogue. At Northwestern University, he studied with Hugo Fox, principal bassoonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. During World War II, he served in the navy aboard the battleship . He was in the Navy Band that played aboard the during the Japanese Surrender. In 1946, he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, first as contrabassoonist, then as second bassoon, where he remained until his retirement in the fall of 1991. He was awarded the Theodore Thomas Medal for his service to the CSO. He was an original member of the Chicago Symphony Woodwind Quintet, and later the Chicago Symphony Winds, which played throughout the United States and abroad. Angola, Indiana
Angola is a city in Pleasant Township, Steuben County, Indiana, United States. The population was 8,612 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Steuben County. Angola was founded by Thomas Gale and Cornelius Gilmore on June 28, 1838, and is home to Trine University. The town is served by I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road (I-80 and I-90). History The Angola post office has been in operation since 1838. Some of the first settlers came from Angola, New York, and they named their new home after their old one. Chicago Conservatory College
The Chicago Conservatory College — not to be confused with The Music Conservatory of Chicago College of Performing Arts — was a music school specialized in advanced levels (or tertiary levels) of musical education based in Chicago, Illinois in the United States of America, which operated between 1857 and 1981. According to a letter written in 1997 by the Board of Higher Education, the college was in good standing at the time of closure. It was founded by musician and composer Robert Goldbeck (1839–1908) in 1857 and is claimed to be the first music conservatory in the US. It preceded the Oberlin Conservatory of Music - which is today considered the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States - and the Chicago Academy of Music (claimed the fourth music conservatory in America) which were founded in 1865 and 1867 respectively. Susan Nigro
Susan L. Nigro (born 1951) is an American contrabassoonist. Unlike most players of the instrument, Nigro's career is primarily as a solo recitalist and recording artist rather than an orchestral player. Life Nigro is a native of Chicago. She is an alumna of Northwestern University and Roosevelt University. Her instructors included Burl Lane and Wilbur Simpson. She is a member of several high-IQ societies, including Mensa and Intertel. Career Her repertoire includes the Gunther Schuller and Daniel Dorff concertos for contrabassoon, as well as the Stamitz and Mozart concertos originally written for the bassoon. Nigro has premiered over 30 works since 1988, most of which were commissioned by her. She has given more premieres than any other contra bassoonist. She has appeared as a soloist with such groups as the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Rome Festival Orchestra, and the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, as well as at multiple International Double Reed Society conferences.
