Wigan County F.C. was the first attempt to establish a football club to represent Wigan at national level. They were the first football team to play their games at Springfield Park (Wigan), Springfield Park and would be followed by Wigan United F.C., Wigan United, Wigan Town A.F.C., Wigan Town, Wigan Borough F.C., Wigan Borough and Wigan Athletic F.C., Wigan Athletic. Springfield Park (Wigan)
Springfield Park was a multi-purpose stadium in Wigan, Greater Manchester. It was the home ground of Wigan Athletic F.C. until the club moved to the new JJB Stadium (now DW Stadium) after the 1998–99 season. At its largest, the stadium held 40,000. In its 102-year existence the ground only saw 32 years as a Football League venue, 11 years for Wigan Borough F.C. and 21 years for Wigan Athletic FC, before it was demolished to make way for a housing estate in 1999. The stadium had previously been home to Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan Town, and Wigan Borough (previously Wigan United and Wigan Association) as well as Wigan and Springfield Borough rugby league sides. It was also used for horse trotting, as a track cycling velodrome, for wrestling and for athletics. John Grundy (footballer)
John Grundy (born 1873) was an English footballer who played as a forward. Born in the small village of Egerton, near Bolton, he joined Newton Heath in April 1895. He stayed with Newton Heath until August 1895, when he left for Halliwell Rovers without having made an appearance for the Heathens. He returned to Newton Heath five years later, in April 1900, and scored on his debut at home to Chesterfield on the final day of the 1899–1900 season. Andy Gara
Andrew Gara (born 15 August 1878; date of death unknown) was an Irish footballer who played as a forward. Club career Gara joined Wigan County on the foundation of the club in 1897,Wigan Examiner: February 22, 1899: Page 4, column 2 scoring against Nelson in the FA Cup in October of the same year. After impressing in a friendly match against Preston North End Gara joined Preston for a reported fee of £100, where he averaged close to a goal every other game, top scoring in the 1900–01 season with 11 goals, despite Preston's relegation that season. Gara would then have a short spell with Nottingham Forest, making 6 appearances and scoring once on his home debut against Aston Villa. He would then join Second division Bristol City, where he scored 6 goals in 18 games, before returning to the Lancashire Combination league with Earlestown, who would be promoted at the end of his season with the club.
