Wife Or Country
''Wife or Country'' is a 1918 American silent film, silent drama film directed by E. Mason Hopper and starring Gloria Swanson in her last role for Triangle Film Corporation. It is not known whether the film currently lost film, survives. Plot Based upon a review in a film magazine, Gretchen (Lederer) has reclaimed husband Dale Barker (Mestayer) from a drinking habit, and he has become a lawyer working with the Department of Justice in hunting down German propagandists. Before their marriage, Gretchen had been involved with propagandists and cannot now extricate herself, and she fears discovery by her husband. She is jealous of Sylvia Hamilton (Swanson), Dale's stenographer, and plans on bringing her under suspicion. When arrested as a spy, Sylvia turns over a mass of evidence, some of which incriminates Gretchen, placing Dale between love of country and loyalty to his wife. Harry Mestayer
Harry Mestayer (1876–1958) was an actor in silent films and theatrical productions in the U.S. He had leading roles and was a supporting actor in more than two dozen films and numerous theaterical productions. He performed in California, was in several hits in Chicago and performed on Broadway. He was the son of Shakespearean actor Charles Mestayer and had several actors in his family. He eventually married Victory Bateman. The Museum of the City of New York has several photographs of him in acting roles. Charles West (November 30, 1885 – October 10, 1943) was an American film actor of the silent film era. He appeared in more than 300 films between 1908 and 1937. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died in Los Angeles, California. Gretchen Lederer (née. Schwallenback, 23 May 1891 – 20 December 1955) was a German actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 80 films between 1912 and 1918. Personal life Gretchen Lederer was born in Cologne, Germany. She was married twice. Her first husband was the Austrian-American actor Otto Lederer. The couple had one son, Leroy Lederer Shepek (1908-1940). Her second husband was the conservative American economist Lewis Henry Haney. Gretchen Lederer was still with him in 1955, when she died in Anaheim, California at age 64. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library."
