Wickersley
Wickersley is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England, situated from the centre of Rotherham. The area is very near to road junctions for the M1, M18 and A1(M) (passing through Bramley, Rotherham). It is home to the secondary school and sixth form, Wickersley School and Sports College. Historical background Wickersley was once held by Richard FitzTurgis (who adopted the name 'de Wickersley), founder of Roche Abbey, and subsequently by his heirs by marriage, the de Livet (Levett) family. The Wickersleys later removed to Sheffield, where they built the home Broom Hall. The village of Wickersley has a population of 7,235 increasing to 7,392 at the 2011 Census. Wickersley School and Sports College is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Wickersley in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. Roche Abbey
Roche Abbey is a now-ruined abbey in the civil parish of Maltby, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It is in the valley of Maltby Dyke, known locally as Maltby Beck, and is administered by English Heritage. It is a scheduled monument and Grade II* listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Early history The abbey was founded in 1147 when the stone buildings were raised on the north side of the beck. The co-founders of Roche were Richard de Busli, likely the great-nephew of the first Roger de Busli, the Norman magnate builder of Tickhill Castle, and Richard FitzTurgis. When the monks first arrived in South Yorkshire from Newminster Abbey in Northumberland, they chose the most suitable side of the stream that runs through the valley to build their new Cistercian monastery. Bramley is a village and civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately from central Rotherham and from Sheffield city centre, both to the west south-west. A1(M) is the designation given to a series of four separate controlled-access highway, motorway sections in England.
