''Why Smith Left Home'' is a 1919 American silent film farce directed by Donald Crisp and starring Bryant Washburn. Famous Players-Lasky produced the film with distribution through Paramount Pictures. This film is based on the turn of the century play, ''Why Smith Left Home'', by George Broadhurst. The play starred Maclyn Arbuckle in the Washburn role. An incomplete copy of ''Why Smith Left Home'' is held at the Library of Congress. Donald Crisp
Donald William Crisp (27 July 188225 May 1974) was an English film actor as well as an early producer, director and screenwriter. His career lasted from the early silent film era into the 1960s. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1942 for his performance in ''How Green Was My Valley''. Early life Donald Crisp was born George William Crisp in Bow, London, in a family home on 27 July 1882. He was the youngest of ten children (four boys and six girls) born to Elizabeth (née Christy) and James Crisp, a labourer. He was educated locally and in 1901 was living with his parents and working as a driver of a horse-drawn vehicle. Crisp made a number of claims about his early life that were eventually proven false decades after his death. He claimed that he was born in 1880 in Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland, and even went so far as to maintain a Scottish accent throughout his life in Hollywood. Maclyn Arbuckle
Maclyn Arbuckle (July 9, 1866 – March 31, 1931) was an American screen and stage actor. He was the brother of actor Andrew Arbuckle and cousin of comedian Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Early life Arbuckle was born in San Antonio, Texas, on July 9, 1866. The son of Mr. and Mrs. James Arbuckle, he was educated in Glasgow before studying law in Boston. When he was 21, he was admitted to the bar, but he stopped practicing law after a year and became an actor. The change of careers came after Arbuckle lost an election for justice of the peace. In a journal entry dated December 1888, he wrote why he hoped to not practice law much longer: "The profession is overcrowded and clients can dictate fees. I have set my heart on other fields where I can get something for my labor, and as soon as an opportunity offers I will go on the stage, where I can have the same chance at the 'greenbacks' and silver of this country." Carrie Clark Ward (January 9, 1862 – February 6, 1926) was an American actress of the silent era. Biography Ward was born in Virginia City, Nevada, in 1862. In 1885 Clark acted in a company at the San Francisco Bush Street Theatre. Ward appeared in more than 60 films between 1911 and 1925. Ward appeared in numerous silent films in the company of many stars, including her comic turn in the Rudolph Valentino-Clarence Brown directed classic ''The Eagle'' 1925. Ward was married to J. Sedley Browne, the first husband of Henrietta Crosman. In 1879, she married comedian and actor James M. Ward. Ward died on February 6, 1926, in Hollywood, California. Walter Hiers (July 18, 1893 – February 27, 1933) was an American silent film actor. Biography Born in 1893, during his two decade-long acting career spanning from 1912 to 1932, Hiers acted in 101 films. He was a particularly prolific actor who could star in over 10 films a year.
