"Why" is a hit song recorded by Frankie Avalon in 1959. It reached No. 1 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart published on the week of December 28, 1959. It was Avalon's second and final No. 1 hit. The song was covered by Donny Osmond, and this version reached No. 3 on the UK Singles chart. Background "Why" was written and produced by Avalon's manager and record producer Robert "Bob" Marcucci and Peter De Angelis. The melody is based on an Italian song. The Avalon version features an uncredited female singer (alleged to be Fran Lori), heard in the repeat of the first four lines of the first part of the song, with Avalon replying, "Yes, I love you". He concludes the last quarter of the song with a coda, by himself. Francis Thomas Avallone (born September 18, 1940), better known as Frankie Avalon, is an American actor, singer, and former teen idol. He had 31 charting U.S. ''Billboard'' singles from 1958 to late 1962, including number one hits, "Venus" and "Why" in 1959. Avalon, started appearing in films in the 1960s and is also well known for his role in the 1970s musical film '' Grease'' as ''Teen Angel'', in which he sings " Beauty School Dropout" to Frenchy (played by Didi Conn). Early life and music Avalon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Mary and Nicholas Avallone. His mother was originally from Sicily. His father was a butcher from Naples or Salerno, in Campania, Italy. His paternal grandmother was from Sicily. "The Twelfth of Never" is a popular song written in 1956 and first recorded by Johnny Mathis the following year. The title is a popular expression, which is used as the date of a future occurrence that will never come to pass. In the case of the song, "the 12th of Never" is given as the date on which the singer will stop loving his beloved, thus indicating that he will always love her. Mathis initially disliked the song, which was released as the flip side to his number 1 hit single " Chances Are". It was written by Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis Webster, the tune (except for the bridge) being adapted from "The Riddle Song" (also known as "I Gave My Love a Cherry"), an old English folk song. Prior to 1969 there was no official singles chart; however, The Official Charts Company and Guinness' British Hit Singles & Albums regard the canonical sources as ''New Musical Express'' (''NME'') before 10 March 1960 and ''Record Retailer'' from then until 15 February 1969 when ''Retailer'' and the BBC jointly commissioned the British Market Research Bureau (BMRB) to compile the charts. In popular music, a cover version, cover song, remake, revival, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by a musician other than the original performer or composer of the song. Originally, it referred to a version of a song released around the same time as the original in order to compete with it. Now, it refers to any subsequent version performed after the original. Anthony Newley (24 September 1931 – 14 April 1999) was an English actor, singer, songwriter, and filmmaker. A "latter-day British Al Jolson", he achieved widespread success in song, and on stage and screen. "One of Broadway's greatest leading men", from 1959 to 1962 he scored a dozen entries on the UK Top 40 chart, including two number one hits. Newley won the 1963 Grammy Award for Song of the Year for " What Kind of Fool Am I", sung by Sammy Davis Jr., and wrote " Feeling Good", which became a signature hit for Nina Simone.
