Whitwell Railway Station, Norfolk
Whitwell and Reepham railway station, also known as Whitwell station, is a former station situated in Norfolk, England. The station closed in 1959 and is a notable stop on the Marriott's Way long-distance footpath. It is being restored as a railway museum, including the re-laying of track. History The station was opened in 1882 as part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway's (M&GN) branch from the main line at Melton Constable to Norwich City. Whilst the route was fairly well-used, it struggled under the competition from the larger Great Eastern Railway and its more direct lines. Only one year prior to opening, the Great Eastern had inaugurated its own station at Reepham which, unlike Whitwell, was conveniently sited to the settlement it purported to serve. The M&GN suffered in the post- Second World War period which saw much freight transfer to road and greater car ownership, leaving the line with its summer and schools traffic. Holt Railway Station (North Norfolk Railway)
Holt railway station, opened in 1987, is the current terminus of the North Norfolk Railway and is a new-build station half a mile south of the proposed, but never built, Blakeney branch junction. The station building once belonged to Stalham railway station, but was moved and reconstructed on site. The current station is located just under a mile away from the site of the original Holt railway station, which had been closed in 1964 by British Railways. William Marriott Museum The William Marriott Museum is located in the goods shed at the station. Operated by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society, the museum features railroad artefacts and memorabilia, as well as historic buildings, locomotives, rolling stock and a historic signalling system. Baguley-Drewry
The Drewry Car Co was a railway locomotive and railcar manufacturer and sales organisation from 1906 to 1984. At the start and the end of its life it built its own products, for the rest of the time it sold vehicles manufactured by sub-contractors. It was separate from the lorry-builder, Shelvoke & Drewry, but it is believed that James Sidney Drewry was involved with both companies. History Charles Stewart Drewry (c1843 - 1929) ran a motor and cycle repair business called Drewry & Sons at Herne Hill Motor Works, Railway Arches, Herne Hill, London. The motive power depot (MPD) or locomotive depot, or traction maintenance depot (TMD), is the place where locomotives are usually housed, repaired and maintained when not being used. They were originally known as "running sheds", "engine sheds" or, for short, just sheds. A goods shed is a railway building designed for storing goods before or after carriage in a train. A typical goods shed will have a track running through it to allow goods wagons to be unloaded under cover, although sometimes they were built alongside a track with possibly just a canopy over the door. There will also be a door to move goods to or from road wagons and vans, this sometimes is parallel to the rail track, or sometimes on the side opposite the rail track. Mid Norfolk Railway
The Mid-Norfolk Railway (MNR) is a preserved standard gauge heritage railway, one of the longest in Great Britain. Preservation efforts began in 1974, but the line re-opened to passengers only in the mid-1990s as part of the "new generation" of heritage railways. The MNR owns and operates most of the former Wymondham to Wells branch, Wymondham-Fakenham branch line of the Norfolk Railway.
