Whittlesea Railway Station, Melbourne
Whittlesea was the original terminus station on the Whittlesea line, located in Victoria, Australia. It opened in 1889, operating until the closure of the line in 1959. History Despite its proximity to Melbourne, the town of Whittlesea had a small population, as did the other settlements served by the line beyond the electrified Melbourne suburban railway system. The station included a siding which connected to the Kinglake timber tramway. The freight service to Whittlesea was closed in the mid 1950s, with the passenger service remaining until the line beyond Lalor was closed on 29 November 1959. The line was partially reopened for suburban electric trains as far Epping in November 1964, with the track beyond removed in 1970. A number of railway lines and stations which formed part of the greater Melbourne railway network have been closed over time, either in part or in full. The decision to close a railway station has historically been made by the department responsible for rail transport within the Government of Victoria. Over the history of the Melbourne railway network, a total of eleven complete railway lines, as well as 71 railway stations, have been closed. The most recent railway station to close is General Motors, which closed on 28 July 2002, due to a lack of pedestrian access; while the most recent railway line to close to traffic is the Port Melbourne railway line, which was closed on 11 October 1987, and was subsequently converted to light rail. A number of stations have also been closed and rebuilt at another location, such as West Footscray, which was rebuilt 160 metres away as part of the Regional Rail Link project. Mernda Railway Station
Mernda railway station is the terminus of the suburban electrified Mernda line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the north-eastern Melbourne suburb of Mernda, and it opened on 26 August 2018. History The original Mernda station opened on 23 December 1889, when the railway line from Epping was extended to Whittlesea. It was originally named South Yan Yean, and was renamed Mernda on 1 December 1913. Mernda operated until the closure of the line beyond Lalor on 29 November 1959, following the electrification of the line as far as Lalor. Epping was re-opened on 29 November 1964, with the electrification of that section of the line. The remaining section of track from Epping to Whittlesea was dismantled in the 1970s, although the former right-of-way remained intact. Prior to the rebuilding, all that remained of the former station was a degraded platform, which was overgrown with exotic vegetation, including a peppercorn tree.
