Whiteford House
Whiteford House was an English country house near Stoke Climsland, Cornwall. It was built in 1775 by John Call and demolished in 1913. History There had been a house at Whiteford since around the 13th century, owned by various families. The estate was sold to John Call in 1763. His son, also named John, became High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1771, and built Whiteford House in 1775 after returning from working in the East India Company. It was described as having "a handsome front" and as well as being lavishly designed, the house included a "looking-glass room" where a post boy was reportedly held prisoner by a parlour maid. Little of the house survives. Some fragments are incorporated in the house of the agent of the home farm, i.e. a Tuscan Doric porch and some tripartite windows. Call's descendants retained ownership of the house until 1870. Whiteford Sands
Whiteford Sands is a two-mile expanse of beach on the northern side of the Gower Peninsula, south Wales. It is the most northerly beach on Gower and sits on the edge of the Loughor estuary. The beach has no direct access by car. Visitors have to park near the village of Llanmadoc, and make their way on foot via country paths. Its relative inaccessibility compared to many other beaches in the Gower makes it a very quiet beach. The beach is popular amongst naturists The cast iron Whiteford Lighthouse is situated in the bay at Whiteford Sands. Whiteford Lighthouse
Whiteford Point Lighthouse is located off the coast at Whiteford Point near Whiteford Sands, on the Gower Peninsula, South Wales. Description It is an unusual cast-iron lighthouse built in 1865 to a design by John Bowen (1825–1873) of Llanelli, by the Llanelli Harbour and Burry Navigation Commissioners to mark the shoals of Whiteford Point, replacing an earlier piled structure of 1854, of which nothing remains. It is the only wave-swept cast-iron tower of this size in Britain. The tower is high and stands just above low-water level. The base is about in diameter and rises to a diameter of at lantern level. A pitched stone apron surrounds the base of the lighthouse. Construction and maintenance The lighthouse sits on 88 wooden piles driven into glacial moraine. These are linked horizontally by walling pieces, using 500 cast-iron plants and bolts. Whiteford National Nature Reserve
Whiteford National Nature Reserve includes an expanse of sandy beach, ''Whiteford Sands'', a wildlife rich sand dune system and forest. The 3-kilometre stretch of sand that curves gently from the cliffs of Broughton Bay towards the poetically isolated Whiteford Lighthouse is one of the quietest spots on the Gower Peninsula. The reserve's various mudflats, sands and salt marshes make it one of the most important wintering areas in Wales for wildfowl and wading birds. The Whiteford (Price) Archeological Site, designated by the Smithsonian trinomial 14SA1, is an archaeological site located in a rural area between Salina and New Cambria, Kansas, United States. As a National Historic Landmark, it is an important Central Plains habitation site, with an unusually well-preserved burial complex. It is on private land, and is not open to the public. Overview The site is located on private property in rural Saline County, Kansas, between the cities of Salina and New Cambria, southeast of the corner of U.S. Route 40 and Simpson Rd, and north of Smoky Hill River. It occupies a portion of alluvial flood plain between the Smoky Hill and Saline Rivers, whose confluence lies to the east. It is unknown exactly what courses the rivers would have followed at the time of the site's occupation. Whiteford is an unincorporated community in Harford County, Maryland, United States. The community has historically had a strong Welsh heritage, which is reflected in the local architecture. The town, a part of the Whiteford-Cardiff Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
