Westmoreland Parish
Westmoreland is the westernmost parish in Jamaica, located on the south side of the island. It is situated south of Hanover, southwest of Saint James, and northwest of Saint Elizabeth, in the county of Cornwall. The chief town and capital is Savanna-la-Mar. Negril, a famous tourist destination, is also situated in the parish. History The earliest inhabitants of Westmoreland were the Arawak and Ciboney Indians. The Ciboney were first to arrive, from the coast of South America, around 500 BC. Known as "cave dwellers", they lived along the cliffs of Negril. The labyrinth of caves and passageways beneath what is now the Xtabi Hotel in Negril are one of the first known settlements of Ciboney Indians in Jamaica. Whitehouse Beach
Whitehouse Beach adjoins an area of former salt marsh in Westmoreland, Jamaica. The area is being developed as a tourist resort. It is located next to the small mountainous community of Culloden and about west of the town of White House The White House is the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., and has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. .... About of the beach is maintained by the new Sandals Whitehouse resort. Bathing Protected by a coral reef, gently shelving waters are almost as still as a mill pond with a few ripples. Two swimming areas 230m and 160m long monitored by lifeguards are marked by buoys. Font Hill Beach
Font Hill Beach is located in St Elizabeth, on the south coast of Jamaica, between Black River and White House. It is within a nature reserve on the Font Hill property owned by the Petroleum Company of Jamaica. It is an attractive, well kept beach with clean golden sand and safe swimming in a roped off area. Beyond the rope there is a shallow reef. Font Hill Beach is sometimes very popular at weekends and holidays, but is usually quiet during weekdays. The facilities include lifeguards, a grassed area with picnic tables under gazebos, bar, showers, changing rooms and toilets, lockers etc. Entry to the beach park is controlled by a guard and cost J$350 for adults,$175 for children and the group rate is $240 per person (in Sept 2008). It is open 9am to 5pm, every day of the week. Font Hill Beach Park is currently closed to the public until further notice.
