''White Fang'' is a 1936 American action film directed by David Butler and written by Sam Duncan, Gene Fowler and Hal Long. The film stars Michael Whalen, Jean Muir, Slim Summerville, Charles Winninger, John Carradine and Jane Darwell. It is based on the 1906 novel ''White Fang'' by Jack London. The film was released on July 17, 1936, by 20th Century Fox. Plot A woman and her weakling brother inherit a mine, but when her brother commits suicide, their guide is accused of murder. David Butler (director)
David Butler (December 17, 1894 – June 14, 1979) was an American actor, film director, film producer, screenwriter, and television director. Biography Butler was born in San Francisco, California. His mother was actress Adele Belgrade, and his father was actor and director Fred J. Butler. His first acting roles were playing extras in stage plays. He later appeared in two D.W. Griffith films: ''The Girl Who Stayed Home'' and ''The Greatest Thing in Life''. He also appeared in the 1927 Academy-Award winning film ''7th Heaven (1927 film), 7th Heaven''. The same year, Butler made his directorial debut with ''High School Hero'', a comedy for Fox Film Corporation#Fox Film Corporation, Fox. During Butler's nine-year tenure at Fox, he directed over 30 films, including four Shirley Temple vehicles. ''White Fang'' is a novel by American author Jack London (1876–1916) — and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in ''Outing'' magazine between May and October 1906, it was published in book form in October 1906. The story details White Fang's journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, ''The Call of the Wild'' (1903), which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Much of ''White Fang'' is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. Lightning was a German shepherd from a line of canine silent film stars. A grandson of Strongheart, Lightning was billed as "The Wonder Dog" and "The Marvel Dog".
