White City, also known as Cooee City or Ugly Land, was an amusement park that existed on the Perth foreshore in Perth, Western Australia between World War I and 1929. Location It was originally located where the current Supreme Court Gardens are located, but in 1922 was moved into the space now occupied by the Elizabeth Quay bus and train stations. It was often referred to being located at the foot of William Street. Uglieland The name Ugly Land (also seen as Uglieland) was used in the era between the World War I and the Centenary of Western Australia in 1929 due to the Ugly Men's Association being involved with management of various events at the park in its history. It also was considered as a significant entertainment venue for poorer sections of the community. The Ugly Men's Association lost an income generator when White City was closed. It is the administrative centre of the South Ayrshire council area and the historic county town of Ayrshire. White City Historic District
White City is a residential neighborhood in Midtown, Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is bounded on the north by 2nd Street, on the east by Fulton Avenue, on the south by 11th Street and on the west by Yale Avenue. The neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The area includes 480 buildings, of which 325 retain their historic significance. Two parks are also included in the listing. History The property now covered by White City had been a part of the Creek Nation since the tribe had emigrated to Indian Territory. After the tribal property allocation, ownership of this piece of land passed to one individual member, Edward Crowell. Glenn T. Braden, founder of Oklahoma Natural Gas Company (now ONE Gas), bought a large part of the tract from Crowell in 1912. Forest Hills is a part of the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Forest Hills is characterized by hilly terrain and wooded areas within and adjacent to its borders. In general, the area slopes upward from Hyde Park Ave and downward from Walk Hill Street. White City is a city in Morris County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 447. History White City was founded in 1871 by a colony from Chicago. It was named for F.C. White, superintendent of the Neosho division of the M-K-T Railroad, which was built on the land in 1868, prior to the existence of the community. Prior to the naming of the community, other names considered were "New Chicago" (because the founders came from Chicago) and "Swedeland" (because so many Swedes settled in the community). The first post office in White City was established in January 1872. In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line from Topeka through White City to Herington. White City, Swansea Greyhound Track was a greyhound racing track in Fforestfach, north-west of Swansea, Wales. It is not to be confused with the Fforestfach track on Ystrad Road that was built later and was called the Swansea Greyhound Stadium. Greyhound Racing started near Pen-llwyn-eithin Farm on 7 July 1928 when over 5,000 attended the race meeting. White City Stadium (Nottingham) was a greyhound racing and motorcycle speedway stadium in Trent Lane, Nottingham. Origins In the late 1920s several plots of land opposite the Nottingham Corporation Sewage Works pumping station and next door to a football ground in Trent Lane were identified and acquired as a perfect site for a speedway and greyhound stadium. Olympic Grounds Speedway arrived first in 1928 when the Nottingham Tornado Motorcycle Club put in a grass track but plans for greyhound racing had been discussed in early 1927 and the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) ensured that they had a financial interest in the stadium. In 1929 a dirt track was laid down by the Olympic Speedway Ltd over the grass track and the stadium was known as the Olympic Grounds but speedway came to an end during the 1931 season. White City Stadium (Newcastle) was a greyhound racing stadium near Scotswood Bridge in Blaydon on Tyne, County Durham. Origins In 1927 the Tyneside Sports Stadium Ltd Company planned to construct a stadium just south of the River Tyne at the end of the Scotswood Bridge. There was a spare plot of land where the stadium could just about squeeze into between the river and the Redheugh Branch railway line. It was the first greyhound track to open in Newcastle and the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) also had a financial interest in the venture. Opening The stadium opened on 26 May 1928 and had a large circumference of 485 yards. Brough Park would open just 28 days later whilst Gosforth did not appear until 1932 and Gateshead 1937, resulting in four rival tracks. White City Stadium was a greyhound racing and speedway stadium in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Origins Construction Manchester is synonymous with greyhound racing because Belle Vue Stadium became the first greyhound track in the United Kingdom and Ireland to hold oval course racing in 1926. One year later on 1 November 1927 the remaining eleven acres out of a sixteen-acre plot of land belonging to the Royal Botanical Gardens was sold to Canine Sports Ltd and a stadium was speedily constructed. The stadium in the Old Trafford area was south of the Chester Road tramway and north of Talbot Road. Opening The first meeting took place on 28 May 1928 followed by speedway on 16 June 1928.
