Whitburn, Tyne And Wear
Whitburn is a village in South Tyneside in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear on the coast of North East England. It is located north of the city of Sunderland and south of the town of South Shields. Historic counties of England, Historically, Whitburn was a part of County Durham. Other nearby population centres include Seaburn, Cleadon and Marsden, Tyne and Wear, Marsden. The village lies on a south-facing slope, part of Durham, England, Durham's Magnesian Limestone plateau, which overlooks Sunderland. Whitburn Church of England Academy is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Whitburn, South Tyneside. Its motto is "Excellence for all". The academy was known as Whitburn Comprehensive School before moving and receiving major upgrades funded by the Church of England. Whitburn Colliery
Whitburn Colliery was a coal mine located about three miles south of South Shields, North East England, located on the North Sea coast. Background Marsden, Tyne and Wear, Marsden was originally a small village, consisting of farms, a few cottages and a lighthouse at Souter Lighthouse, Souter Point. Local industry consisted of a small limestone quarry. Development In the 1870s, the Whitburn Coal Company bought the five quarries, two of which were developed as the Lighthouse (Marsden) Quarries. On 14 July 1874 the company began sinking the Whitburn winnings, a bore-hole put down below the Brockwell Seam. However, the company failed to find any coal, and was faced with large amounts of water ingress from the North Sea. In 1877, a new shaft was developed using the Kind-Chaudron process, its first deployment in the UK coal industry. Whitburn (originally Whiteburn) is a small town in West Lothian, Scotland, halfway between Scotlands's two largest cities, about east of Glasgow and west of Edinburgh. The nearest major towns are Bathgate, and Livingston, . History Originally a small farming & weaving community centred around the burn that runs through, it was once a district of Linlithgow until 1973 and a parish of Livingston until 1730 when it established into its own as the population began to rise. When reliable statistics began with the Statistical Accounts of Scotland the population was counted at 1,322 in 1755 followed by a more accurately count of 1,322 in 1795. Vanessa Victoria Whitburn OBE (born 1951) is a British radio producer, and a former editor of ''The Archers''. Early life She was born in Totnes in Devon, the daughter of Victor Whitburn and Eileen Wellington. She has a younger brother (born 1954). She failed her 11-plus and her parents sent her to a private convent school in Exeter (which closed in 1997). She graduated from the University of Hull with a BA degree in English and American Studies in 1974. Earlier career She joined the BBC after university in 1974 as a trainee sound technician. From 1976–77, she worked for BBC Television. From 1977, she worked as a producer in radio drama for the BBC, at their Radio Drama Unit, which produced the ''Afternoon Play''. From 1977 to 1980, she was assistant producer of ''The Archers'' while William Smethurst was in charge of the programme.
