''When a Man's a Man'' is a 1924 American silent Western film directed by Edward F. Cline and starring John Bowers, Marguerite De La Motte, and Robert Frazer. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Lawrence Knight, a millionaire loafer, is rejected by his sweetheart Helen Wakefield because he has never done anything worthy of a man. He goes west and obtains work at a ranch in Arizona. Although at first a tenderfoot, he masters the art of riding and roping and becomes a close friend of the foreman, Phil Acton. After attending school in the east, Phil's sweetheart, Kitty Reid, returns to her father's ranch and, believing that she can no longer endure ranch life, tells Phil that she cannot marry him. Phil becomes jealous of Knight and comes to believe that he is in league with a gang of cattle thieves. During a trip to the hills, Phil is shot in the back and seriously wounded by a cattle thief. Elizabeth Rhodes born Elizabeth Brittan (1759 – 17 April 1836) was a British governess, housekeeper and Methodist leader. Life Rhodes was born in Scotland with the name Brittan. Her mother was from York and her father was a Captain in the Queen's Regiment of Dragoon Guards until 1760. They moved to York where in 1765 her father left the home with their maid. During the 1770s she tried living with her aunt and uncle in Manchester but she returned to York. She rediscovered her father in Surrey where he was living with another woman. Sir James Pennyman, 6th Baronet employed the Rhodes during the later 1770s as a governess to his daughter. Rhodes witnessed the Gordon Riots from Pennyman's home in 1780. Her biographer estimates that she was converted to Methodism in about 1784 by followers in Beverley and York. Sir William Clerke, 8th Baronet employed Rhodes as his housekeeper. The UCLA Film & Television Archive is a visual arts organization focused on the preservation, study, and appreciation of film and television, based at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Steer wrestling, also known as bulldogging, is a rodeo event in which a horse-mounted rider chases a steer, drops from the horse to the steer, then wrestles the steer to the ground by grabbing its horns and pulling it off-balance so that it falls to the ground. The event carries a high risk of injury to the cowboy. Some concerns from the animal-rights community express that the competition may include practices that constitute cruelty to animals, but the injury rate to animals is less than 0.05%. A later PRCA survey of 60,971 animal performances at 198 rodeo performances and 73 sections of "slack" indicated 27 animals were injured, again around 0.05%. Prescott ( ) is a city in Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. According to the 2020 Census, the city's population was 45,827. The city is the county seat of Yavapai County. In 1864, Prescott was designated as the capital of the Arizona Territory, replacing the temporary capital of Fort Whipple. The Territorial Capital was moved to Tucson in 1867. Charles Hill Mailes (25 May 1870 – 17 February 1937) was a Canadian actor of the silent era. Biography Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1870, Mailes appeared in 290 films between 1909 and 1935. He married the actress Claire McDowell in 1906 and the happy couple appeared in numerous silent films together including '' The Mark of Zorro'' (1920). They had two sons, Robert and Eugene. Arthur Hoyt
Arthur Hoyt (March 19, 1874 – January 4, 1953) was an American film character actor who appeared in more than 275 films in his 34-year film career, about a third of them silent films. Career Born in Georgetown, Colorado, in 1874, Hoyt made his Broadway debut in 1905 in ''The Prince Consort''. He also appeared in Ferenc Molnár's ''The Devil'' in 1908, and made his final Broadway appearance in ''The Great Name'' in 1911. Hoyt made the silent comedy short ''The Scrub Lady'' in 1914, but his film acting career did not begin in earnest until 1916 when he appeared in another short, ''The Heart of a Show Girl''. From that time until 1944, each year a film was released in which Hoyt had acted – and frequently up to a dozen or so.
