''When My Baby Smiles at Me'' is a 1948 musical film directed by Walter Lang and starring Betty Grable and Dan Dailey. Released by 20th Century Fox, it is the third film based on the popular 1927 Broadway play '' Burlesque'', the others being ''The Dance of Life'' (1929) and '' Swing High, Swing Low'' (1937). ''When My Baby Smiles at Me'' is the first (and to date, the only) full Technicolor film version of that play; ''The Dance of Life'' had several Technicolor sequences, but they are no longer extant. Dan Dailey received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance, but lost to Laurence Olivier for ''Hamlet''. Walter Lang
Walter Lang (August 10, 1896 – February 7, 1972) was an American film director. Early life Walter Lang was born in Tennessee. As a young man he went to New York City where he found clerical work at a movie studio, film production company. The business piqued his artistic instincts and he began learning the various facets of filmmaking and eventually worked as an assistant director. However, Lang also had ambitions to be a painter and left the United States for a time to join the great gathering of artists and writers in the Montparnasse Quarter of Paris, France. Things did not work out as Lang hoped and he eventually returned home and to the film business. Career In 1925, Walter Lang directed his first silent film, ''The Red Kimono''. Richard Arlen (born Sylvanus Richard Mattimore, September 1, 1899 – March 28, 1976) was an American actor of film and television. Biography Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Arlen attended the University of Pennsylvania. He served in Canada as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I.
