The family name Whelan is an anglicisation of the Irish surname Ó Faoláin. Dave Whelan
David Whelan (born 24 November 1936) is an English businessman and former footballer. During his football career, he played for Blackburn Rovers and Crewe Alexandra. Whelan is the former owner of club Wigan Athletic, having also been the chairman of the club for twenty years, before passing the position over to his grandson, David Sharpe, who eventually passed the ownership over to International Entertainment Corporation. Early life Whelan was born in Bradford and raised in Wigan. His forebears hailed from County Tipperary, Ireland. Brian Whelan (born 3 May 1957) is an Irish painter, author and playwright. Early life Whelan was born in Ealing, West London, UK, of Irish Roman Catholic parents. His childhood was spent both in London and Ireland (Kilkenny Waterford and Dublin). After his training at Kingston Polytechnic College and the Royal Academy of Arts, he lived and worked for 30 years in various parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, England. These early years were spent painting, organizing various multi-disciplined art events and making films. Bill Whelan
Bill Whelan (born 22 May 1950 in Limerick, Ireland) is an Irish composer and musician. He is best known for composing a piece for the interval of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. The result, ''Riverdance'', was a seven-minute display of traditional Irish dancing that became a full-length stage production and spawned a worldwide craze for Irish dancing and Celtic music and also won him a Grammy. "Riverdance" was released as a single in 1994, credited to "Bill Whelan and Anúna featuring the RTÉ Concert Orchestra". It reached number one in Ireland for 18 weeks and number nine in the UK. The album of the same title reached number 31 in the album charts in 1995. Aileen Mary Whelan (born 11 August 1991) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder or forward for FA WSL club Leicester City. Whelan started her playing career in 1996 at Rugby Town Girls FC, after it was set up by Steve Heighton and Michelle Guppy and her father Declan became a coach. Ciarán Whelan (born 28 February 1976 in Raheny, County Dublin) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for the Raheny club and, formerly, for the Dublin county team. Christopher David Whelan (born 8 May 1986 in Liverpool) is an English first-class cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium bowler, who has represented Middlesex and Worcestershire. He came through the ranks at Sefton Park CC, taking a 1st XI hat-trick at Lytham aged 16, and scored a record 177 not out for his school, St Margaret's, in an under-15 final. Charles Alexander James Whelan (born 3 February 1954, north-east Surrey) is former political director of the British trade union Unite. Anto Whelan
Anthony Gerard Whelan (born 23 November 1959) is an Irish former soccer player who played during the 1970s and 1980s. He made his League of Ireland debut for Bohemians on 9 September 1979 and made 25 league appearances (4 goals) and two appearances for Bohs in European competition before transferring to Manchester United in August 1980 for £30,000. After making just one appearance for Manchester United as a substitute for Kevin Moran, he moved to America.
