The Wheeling, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia and one in eastern Ohio, anchored by the city of Wheeling. As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 147,950. This represents a decline of 3.4% from the 2000 census population of 153,172. Greater Wheeling is generally considered part of the Pittsburgh Tri-State area, as the area is heavily influenced by Pittsburgh media and transportation (notably Pittsburgh International Airport), as well as some Ohio media and sports influence. Barnesville, Ohio
Barnesville is a village in Belmont County, Ohio, United States. It is located in the central portion of Warren Township in Belmont County and is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,193 at the 2010 census. History The town was named after James Barnes, who was the first settler. Barnes was born in Montgomery County, Maryland and was married to Nancy Harrison, "an intelligent Quaker lady". Barnes owned a farm in Montgomery County, and later laid out a town there, also known as Barnesville, Maryland, where he operated a country store for a while. In 1803 he moved to St. Clairsville, Ohio where he operated a tavern and general store. Shadyside, Ohio
Shadyside is a village in eastern Belmont County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 3,454 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Wheeling metropolitan area. History Shadyside had its start in 1879 when the railroad was extended to that point. The town site was platted in 1901. The village was named after a local tree-lined farm. On the evening of June 14, 1990, three to six inches (76 mm) of rain fell in less than two hours, in the ridges to the west, creating a flash flood in the Shadyside area which caused twenty-six fatalities and destroyed or damaged many buildings. Powhatan Point is a village in southeastern Belmont County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,461 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Wheeling metropolitan area. While "Powhatan" likely memorializes the Native-American tribe of the same name, the "Point" in the town's name refers to the confluence between the Captina Creek and the Ohio River. Neffs is a census-designated place (CDP) in Belmont County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. History A post office called Neffs has been in operation since 1892. Besides the post office, Neffs had a sawmill and gristmill. The local Neffs (or Neife) family came to Belmont County from Switzerland via Pennsylvania and Maryland. Bridgeport is a village in eastern Belmont County, Ohio, United States.
