Wheeler H. Bristol
Wheeler Hutchison Bristol (January 16, 1818 Canaan, Columbia County, New York – November 21, 1904 DeLand, Volusia County, Florida) was an American engineer, railroad executive and politician. He was New York State Treasurer from 1868 to 1871. Life He was born on January 16, 1818, in Canaan, Columbia County, New York, to George Bristol and Sally (Hutchinson) Bristol. He married Mary Ann Worthington on October 5, 1848. In 1886, his residence on the "Glenmary" estate, which he had bought from Nathaniel Parker Willis who had lived from 1837 to 1842 in another house nearby, at Owego was burgled after he had moved to Florida. Thomas Raines
Thomas Raines (August 13, 1842 – August 12, 1924) was an American lawyer and politician. Life He was born on August 13, 1842, in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, the son of Rev. John Raines (1818–1877) and Mary (Remington) Raines (1815–1889). He was educated in Canandaigua and began his career as a store clerk in Lyons. At age 21, he became active in finance as one of the organizers of a new bank in Geneva. In 1867, he settled in Rochester and became Cashier of the "Farmers' and Mechanics' National Bank." He was New York State Treasurer from 1872 to 1875. He was elected at the New York state election, 1871 on the Republican ticket, became a Liberal Republican in 1872, and was re-elected at the New York state election, 1873 on the Democratic ticket. In May 1874, he suffered a nervous breakdown. He was described in contemporary news accounts as a "raving lunatic", being "stark mad", and suffering from "religious frenzy". Canaan is a Administrative divisions of New York#Town, town in Columbia County, New York, Columbia County, New York (state), New York, United States. The population was 1,570 at the 2020 census, down from 1,710 at the 2010 census. The town is in the northeastern part of the county. History The first settlers arrived around 1759. Joseph Howland
Joseph Howland (December 3, 1834 in New York City – March 31, 1886 in Menton, Alpes-Maritimes, France) was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War, politician and philanthropist. Early life Howland was born into a prominent merchant family that had grown rich in the China trade. His first American ancestor, John Howland, was one of the Pilgrim (Plymouth Colony), Pilgrim Fathers and a signer of the 1620 Mayflower Compact, the governing document of what became Plymouth Colony. Howland's father was Samuel Shaw Howland, a partner in the shipping firm of Howland & Aspinwall; his mother was Joanna Esther Hone, the niece of Philip Hone, the noted diarist and mayor of New York City. The family lived at 12 Washington Square.
