Alamo is a city in Wheeler County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 771. The city is the county seat of Wheeler County. History Alamo was founded in 1890 as a stop on the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. It was named for the Alamo Mission in San Antonio, Texas. Alamo was chartered in 1909. Wheeler County is a County (United States), county located in the Central Georgia, central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census, the population was 7,421. The county seat is Alamo, Georgia, Alamo. The county is one of the most impoverished counties in the nation. The American Community Survey, American Community Survey's 2009–2013 average reports that the county's Per capita income, per-capita income of $8,948 makes it the List of lowest-income counties in the United States, second-poorest county in the United States by this metric. The measurement however is misleading as Wheeler County is the site of Wheeler Correctional Facility, a large prison with a capacity of 3,028 prisoners, about 40 percent of the county's total population. Helena was a city in Telfair County, Georgia, Telfair and Wheeler County, Georgia, Wheeler counties in the U.S. state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. The population was 2,883 at the 2010 census, up from 2,307 in 2000 and 1,256 in 1990. The population increase accompanied establishment of the McRae Correctional Institution, which provided new jobs. The prison population is counted as well. On January 1, 2015, Helena and the adjacent city (and Telfair County seat) of McRae, Georgia, McRae merged to form McRae-Helena, Georgia, McRae-Helena. History The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place as the Town of Helena in 1890. It is unknown why the name "Helena" was applied to this community. By 2013, Helena's wastewater capacity had become too large for the city to manage. Simply turning over water services to neighboring McRae would have left Helena with only two services.
