Athens Olympic Tennis Centre
The Athens Olympic Tennis Centre is a grouping of 16 tennis courts at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, in Marousi, Athens, Greece. The centre consists of a main stadium, known as The Main Court, seating 8,600 fans - though only 6,000 seats were made publicly available during the 2004 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Paralympics- two semifinal courts, seating 4,300 spectators - though only 3,200 seats were made publicly available during the Olympics - and thirteen side courts, seating 200 observers each. Each of the courts use the DecoTurf cushioned acrylic surface, the same surface as the U.S. Open Grand Slam event. The Main Court, in particular, is extremely large by the standards of major tennis competitions, with the seats being relatively far removed from the tennis court. Kaitlyn Louise Verfeurth (born 12 August 1985) is a paracanoe athlete. She is a former American people, American wheelchair tennis player who competed in international level events. Verfuerth sustained an L2 incomplete spinal cord injury aged seven when she was involved in a car accident in 1993. She spent 96 days hospitalised in Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee and then two months of bed rest. Verfuerth competed in wheelchair tennis at the 2004, 2008 and 2016 Paralympic Games. She retired after 2016 Paralympic Games due to the travel demand for tennis players. However, she picked up paracanoe in 2017 after meeting United States' paracanoe coach during the 2016 Games. Britta Siegers (born 4 July 1966) is a retired German wheelchair tennis player and Paralympic swimmer who competed in international level events. She was the first German disabled athlete to compete in two different sports at the Paralympics: she was a swimmer from 1984 to 1992 and returned twelve years later as a wheelchair tennis player at the 2004 Summer Paralympics. Swimming career Siegers' first sport was swimming when she started in 1969 after she lost both of her legs in a train accident aged two years old. Karin Korb (born 1967) is a retired American wheelchair tennis player of German parentage who competed in international level events. She has participated at the Summer Paralympics twice. She was the first disabled person to receive a Division I athletic scholarship to Georgia State University to play intercollegiate wheelchair tennis. Prior to entering Georgia State and earning her master's degree there, Korb graduated with a bachelor's counterpart from Division III and thus non-scholarship Kean University in her birth state, New Jersey. When she was 17, Korb broke her back after falling badly from a gymnastics vault which left her paralyzed from the waist down and has used a wheelchair since the accident.
