Wheelchair tennis at the 2008 Summer Paralympics was held at the Olympic Green Tennis Centre from 8 September to 15 September. Classification Players were given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allowed players to compete against others with a similar level of function. To compete in wheelchair tennis, athletes had to have a major or total loss of function in one or both legs. Quadriplegic players competed in the mixed events, while players with full use of their arms competed in the separate men's and women's events. Olympic Green Tennis Centre
The National Tennis Center (), is a tennis center located in the Olympic Green. It opened on 1 October 2007. It hosted the tennis preliminaries and finals of singles and doubles for men and women at the Beijing 2008 Olympics as well as the Paralympic wheelchair tennis competitions. Wheelchair tennis was first contested at the Summer Paralympics as a demonstration sport in 1988, with two events being held (men's and women's singles). It became an official medal-awarding sport in 1992 and has been competed at every Summer Paralympics since then. Four events were held from 1992 to 2000, with quad events (mixed gender) in both singles and doubles added in 2004. Summary Events Six events are contested at each Paralympic. Jamie Burdekin
Jamie Burdekin (born 10 December 1979 in Liverpool) is an English wheelchair tennis player. He competed at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, the 2012 Summer Paralympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics. He won the bronze medal together with Peter Norfolk in the Quad Doubles event at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. Norfolk and Burdekin also won the Quad Doubles event at the Japan Open as part of the 2012 ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour. Shraga Weinberg
Shraga Weinberg (born 25 March 1966 in Petach Tiqva) is an Israeli wheelchair tennis player. Weinberg was born in 1966, paralyzed in his upper body. He also has bone density abnormalities, which caused him to go through many surgeries in his younger years. For his recreation and rehabilitation, he began practicing disabled sports at the Israel Sports Center for the Disabled. In 2008 he was ranked 8th in the world in wheelchair tennis. In wheelchair tennis, Weinberg was ranked 1st in 2001 for singles' tournaments and in 2003 for couples' tournaments. In the five years prior to the 2004 Summer Paralympics, he was also ranked at the top of the Israeli chart. At the Paralympic Games he competed in singles and lost at the quarter final. Boaz Kramer ( he, בועז קרמר; born 12 January 1978) is an Israeli former professional wheelchair tennis player. Biography Boaz Kramer was born partially paralyzed in his left arm and both legs. At the age of five he began practicing disabled sports at the Israel Sports Center for the Disabled. He was active in wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis, competing internationally in tennis. David Wagner (born March 4, 1974) is an American wheelchair tennis player. Paralyzed from the mid-chest down and with thirty percent function in his hands, he competes in the quad division. He plays by taping the tennis racket to his hand. He is currently ranked number three in the world in singles and number two in doubles. Early life Wagner was born in Fullerton, California, and grew up in Walla Walla, Washington. He played basketball in high school and tennis in college. He became a quadriplegic at age 21 while visiting a friend in Redondo Beach, California, during summer break.
