Wheelchair Sports NSW
Wheelchair Sports NSW is the peak New South Wales sports organisation that assists people with disabilities ranging from spinal cord injury, spina bifida, amputation, paraplegia, quadriplegia to other similar disabling conditions. The organisation was established as the Paraplegic Sports Club, a section of the Paraplegic Association of NSW (also known as ParaQuad) in October 1961. It offers a range of sports programs, facilities and financial support from beginners to Paralympians. History In April 1961, the Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of NSW (later known as ParaQuad NSW) as established to create opportunities for people with a spinal disability. Louise Sauvage
Alix Louise Sauvage, OAM (born 18 September 1973) is an Australian paralympic wheelchair racer and leading coach. Sauvage is often regarded as the most renowned disabled sportswoman in Australia. She won nine gold and four silver medals at four Paralympic Games and eleven gold and two silver medals at three IPC Athletics World Championships. She has won four Boston Marathons, and held world records in the 1500 m, 5000 m and 4x100 m and 4x400 m relays. She was Australian Female Athlete of the Year in 1999, and International Female Wheelchair Athlete of the Year in 1999 and 2000. In 2002, her autobiography ''Louise Sauvage: My Story'' was published. Ryley Batt
Ryley Batt, (born 22 May 1989) is an Australian wheelchair rugby player. He has won two gold and one silver medal at five Paralympic Games. Biography Ryley Douglas Batt was born on 22 May 1989 without legs and had surgery to separate his webbed fingers. Up to the age of twelve, he did not use a wheelchair, preferring to move around on a skateboard. He was convinced to use a wheelchair when he saw a demonstration of wheelchair rugby at his school, and took up the sport shortly afterwards in that year. He first participated in the Australian Steelers in 2002. Gerry Hewson
Gerard "Gerry" Benjamin Hewson, Order of Australia, OAM (born 5 June 1958) is an Australian former Paralympic wheelchair basketballer. He has coached wheelchair basketball on the national and international level in Australia. Gerry is now studying horticulture at TAFE and is the producer of Gerard Benjamin honey from Cedar Brush Creek. Personal Hewson was born on 5 June 1958 in the New South Wales town of Young, New South Wales, Young. In 2007 a nude picture of Hewson and his pregnant wife was displayed at the Museum of Sex in New York City as part of an exhibit called "Intimate Encounters", that focused on the sex lives of disabled athletes. Troy Sachs
Troy Sachs, OAM (born 3 December 1975) is an Australian wheelchair basketball player. He competed at five Paralympic Games from 1992 to 2008, where he won three medals. Sachs won two national league championships in Australia, three national league championships in the United States, one national league championship in Germany, and an André Vergauwen Cup championship with Italian club Tabu Cantu. Personal Sachs was born in the Wollongong suburb of Bulli on 3 December 1975. He was born without a tibia and with a deformed foot, and the affected leg was amputated below the knee when he was two and a half years old; he has worn a prosthetic leg since then. Lisa Edmonds
Lisa Edmonds (née O'Nion) (born 5 June 1967 in Hertfordshire, England) is a wheelchair basketball player from Australia. She was part of the silver medal-winning Australia women's national wheelchair basketball team at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. She retired from competitive wheelchair basketball in 2013 and is regarded as one of the pioneers of the women's game in Australia. Liesl Tesch
Liesl Dorothy Tesch AM (born 17 May 1969) is an Australian wheelchair basketball player, sailor, and politician. She is a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Gosford since the 2017 Gosford state by-election. Tesch became an incomplete paraplegic after a mountain bike accident at the age of 19. She competed in her national wheelchair basketball team at five paralympics, winning three medals, and was the first woman to play the sport professionally. Matthew John Levy, (born 11 January 1987) is a retired Australian Paralympic swimmer. At five Paralympic Games from 2004 to 2020, he has won three gold, one silver and six bronze medals. Personal Levy has cerebral palsy and a vision impairment due to being born 15 weeks premature. He attended St Andrew's Cathedral School in Sydney. He works at Westpac Bank, is on the board of directors of the New South Wales disability organisation Ability Options, and lives in Sydney. Alan Chadwick
Alan Chadwick (July 27, 1909 – May 25, 1980) an English master gardener, was a leading innovator of organic farming techniques and influential educator in the field of biodynamic/French intensive gardening. He was a student of Rudolf Steiner and is often cited as inspirational to the development of the "California cuisine" movement. The Chadwick restaurant in Beverly Hills was named after him. His grave is marked by a stupa at the Green Gulch Farm Zen Center in California. John Maclean (sportsperson)
John Alexander Maclean, Order of Australia, OAM (born 27 May 1966) is an Australian triathlon, triathlete, rower, and motivational speaker. A promising rugby league player in his youth, he became a paraplegic after being knocked from his bicycle by a truck in 1988. He subsequently became the first paraplegic to finish the Ironman World Championship and the first to swim the English Channel. Later, he was part of the athletics team at both the Olympics and Paralympics in 2000, and won a silver medal in rowing at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, 2008 Beijing Paralympics. In 2014, he completed the Nepean Triathlon without using a wheelchair, after regaining some use of his legs through Ware K Tremor therapy. Vic Renalson
Victor "Vic" Allen Renalson, MBE (1926/1927 – July 1998) was an Australian athlete, weightlifter, and track and field coach. He won ten medals at four Paralympics from 1964 to 1976, and worked as a track and field coach for both Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Personal life Renalson became a paraplegic after a car accident in 1951 at the age of 23. He was working as a fitter and Turner and was driving to North Queensland to work on a sugarcane plantation when the steering on his car failed near Sarina. The car hit a bridge and he was thrown to a dry creek bed. He was married to Laurel, a former Queensland netballer and Australian walking champion, who died in 1992. He died in July 1998 on Queensland's Sunshine Coast at the age of 71.
