A C Wharton Jr. (born August 17, 1944) is an American educator, politician, and attorney who served as the 63rd mayor of Memphis, Tennessee and previously mayor of Shelby County. He is the first African American to serve as Mayor of Shelby County. Early life, education, and early career A C Wharton was born and raised in Lebanon, Tennessee. A C Wharton shares his name with his father and grandfather, and named his eldest son by the same name. Wharton has stated that his first name is simply the letters "A" and "C" and does not stand for anything else. He graduated from Tennessee State University with a degree in political science and earned a J.D. degree from the University of Mississippi. Sir George Wharton, 1st Baronet
Sir George Wharton, 1st Baronet (4 April 1617 – 12 August 1681) was an English Royalist soldier and astrologer. He was also known for his poetry. Life He was the son of a blacksmith in Westmorland. He went to Oxford to study, though not admitted to the university. He then returned to Westmorland, and in 1642 sold his family property, and raised his own troop of horse for the Royalist cause. He shared defeat at Stow-on-the-Wold, in 1643. He is said to have served under Jacob Astley, 1st Baron Astley of Reading. He then went to Charles I at Oxford, and was given a paymaster position in the Ordnance, under Sir John Heydon. At this period he became a friend of Elias Ashmole, helping him to a military commission. Wharton attended, with Ashmole, the first meeting in 1647 of the Society of Astrologers at Gresham College. Gabriel Caldwell Wharton
Gabriel Caldwell Wharton was born in Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky, 13 June 1839 and died in Louisville, Kentucky, 22 February 1887. Wharton enlisted in 1861 with the 10th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. During the Battle of Chickamauga, the brigade commander of the 2d Brigade (of the 3d Division, 14th Army Corps) fell, and Col. William H. Hays who was commander of the 10th Infantry Regiment took command of that brigade. Col. Wharton took command of the 10th Infantry Regiment at that time."The Union Regiments of Kentucky", Col. Edith Wharton (; born Edith Newbold Jones; January 24, 1862 – August 11, 1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, and interior designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray realistically the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature, for her novel ''The Age of Innocence''. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1996. Anne Wharton (née Lee, 20 July 1659 - 29 October 1685) was an English poet and verse dramatist. Little of her work was published in her lifetime, but some 45 pieces have been ascribed to her. Life Anne Lee was born 20 July 1659 at Ditchley Park, Oxfordshire, the posthumous younger daughter of Sir Henry Lee, and a member of a wealthy family. Her mother Anne Danvers, daughter of Sir John Danvers, died not long after her birth. She and her sister Eleanor were brought up at Adderbury House, where they lived with the mistress, mother and grandmother of its owner, the poet and libertine John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, who was Anne Wharton's uncle. Louis Wharton
Louis Edgar Wharton (18 January 1896 – 31 December 1957), played first-class cricket in 12 matches in English cricket in the period from 1920 to 1922. He appeared once for Oxford University in 1920, and then 11 times for Somerset in 1921 and 1922. Born at Port of Spain in Trinidad and educated at Douai School, Wharton was a right-handed middle-order batsman and an occasional bowler, though his bowling style is not known. He was at Oxford University as a "senior" in 1920 and played in two of three trial matches at the start of the season. He figured in only one first-class match for the university, however, in what Wisden described as "a very weak side" against The Army. Despite scoring 47 of a total of 95 in the second Oxford innings, and taking two of the three wickets he managed in his career during this match, he was not picked again.
