Whaling City Sound
Whaling City Sound is an independent jazz record label established by Neal Weiss in 1999. History Weiss is president of Fiber Optic Center in New Bedford, Massachusetts. A lifelong fan of jazz, he started Whaling City Sound as a jazz label, though he has dabbled in other genres such as blues and classical. The first acts to sign were both from New Bedford, pianist John Harrison and vocalist Marcelle Gauvin, who recorded the first album in the catalog. Gerry Gibbs, the son of jazz vibraphonist Terry Gibbs, fulfilled a dream when he formed the Thrasher Dream Trio with bassist Ron Carter and pianist Kenny Barron and released an album in 2013. Naxos comprises numerous companies, divisions, imprints, and labels specializing in classical music but also audiobooks and other genres. The premier label is Naxos Records which focuses on classical music. Naxos Musical Group encompasses about 17 labels including Naxos Records, Naxos Audiobooks, and Naxos Books (ebooks). Monika Herzig
Monika Herzig (born 1964) is a German-born jazz pianist. After receiving a scholarship in 1987 from the pedagogical institute in Weingarten, Germany for a one-year exchange program at the University of Alabama, she moved to the United States in August 1988. Later, she completed her Doctorate in Music Education with a minor in Jazz Studies at Indiana University, where she is a faculty member in Arts Administration. She recorded with the jazz fusion group BeebleBrox and has produced four albums as leader of the Monika Herzig Acoustic Project. Jazz Record Labels
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. Alon Yavnai
Alon Yavnai ( he, אלון יבנאי; born 1969) is an Israel-born jazz pianist. Biography Born in Israel, Yavnai began playing piano at the age of four. He has accompanied singers since the age of thirteen. He graduated from the Thelma Yellin High School for Arts, Givatayim Conservatory, both in Israel, and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusett. He won first place in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition. He taught at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Yavnai leads a trio and has worked in a duo with Paquito D'Rivera and in a trio with Mark Summer. Clark Terry
Clark Virgil Terry Jr. (December 14, 1920 – February 21, 2015) was an American swing and bebop trumpeter, a pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, and a composer and educator. He played with Charlie Barnet (1947), Count Basie (1948–51), Duke Ellington (1951–59), Quincy Jones (1960), and Oscar Peterson (1964–96). He was with The Tonight Show Band on ''The Tonight Show'' from 1962 to 1972. Michael Stephans
Michael Stephans (born June 9, 1945) is an American jazz drummer, writer, poet and college professor. Biography and career As a jazz drummer, Stephans has performed and recorded with artists including Dave Liebman, Bennie Maupin, Joe Lovano, Bob Brookmeyer, Don Menza, and Alan Broadbent. Stephans' first solo recording, ''Om ShalOM'', was critically lauded in 2007 by UK critic Tom Barlow as an album of the year in the December 2007 – January 2008 issue of ''Jazzwise''. John Stein (guitarist)
John Stein is a jazz guitarist and teacher from Kansas City, Missouri. Career A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Stein took his first guitar lesson when he was seven and his first jazz lesson when he was thirteen. In 1967, he attended Beloit College, but he dropped out and moved to Vermont. He worked in local clubs playing rock music, then took jazz lessons from a pianist. When he was thirty, he attended the Berklee College of Music and taught there after he graduated. He received a master's degree in education from Harvard and also plays double bass. His first album, ''Hustle Up!'', was released in 1995. Stein considers Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall his two biggest influences. Harvie S (born Harvie Swartz; December 6, 1948) is an American jazz double-bassist. He learned piano as a child and did not begin playing bass until 1967, when he was nineteen years old. Jason Miles
Jason Miles (born June 30, 1951) is an American jazz keyboardist, composer, and record producer. Throughout his career, he has worked with trumpeter Miles Davis, bassist Marcus Miller, and singer Luther Vandross, as well as maintaining a successful solo career. Career Miles was born in Brooklyn, New York, and went to Indiana State University. When jazz fusion was becoming popular in the 1970s, Miles was in New York creating innovative techniques in synthesizer programming and electronic music. Rale Micic
Rale Mićić ( sr-cyr, Рале Mићић; born October 9, 1975) is a Serbian jazz guitarist and composer. Micic moved to United States in 1995 after receiving a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music, where he studied with George Garzone, John Thomas, and Bob Brookmeyer. It was also by that time that Mick Goodrick, became his mentor. In 2000, Micic moved to New York City. His debut album, ''Bridges'' (CTA, 2003), mixed jazz with Balkan music. His second album, ''Serbia'', featured jazz trumpeter Tom Harrell. In 2010 Micic started a guitar duo series called Guitar x2. Steve Kirby (musician)
Steve Kirby (born May 23, 1956) is an American jazz bassist, composer and educator. Biography Kirby was born in Maumee Valley, Ohio, and his family moved to St. Louis when he was two. He began playing guitar and bass guitar while stationed at Fort Bragg, and following this he attended Webster University, receiving his degree in 1985. He worked in ensembles and then got his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music, where he played with Lester Bowie. In 1988 he returned to Webster, where he taught until 1993. In January 2017, Kirby released ''All Over the Map'', his first orchestral recording featuring his compositions.
