Whales Alive
''Whales Alive'' is a 1987 album of improvisational duets and sometimes trios between Paul Winter, Paul Halley, and recordings of humpback whales. Winter and Halley also collaborate with Leonard Nimoy, who reads poems and prose from various writers, including D.H. Lawrence and Roger Payne. The audio recordings made of the whales for this recording were used in the '' Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home'' (Nov. 1986) movie (for which Nimoy directed and reprised his character Spock), featuring the whales nicknamed 'George and Gracie'. Paul Winter
Paul Winter (born August 31, 1939) is an American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. He is a pioneer of world music and earth music, which interweaves the voices of the wild with instrumental voices from classical, jazz and world music. The music is often improvised and recorded in nature to reflect the qualities brought into play by the environment. Early life Winter was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, United States. He studied piano and clarinet, then fell in love with saxophone in the fourth grade. He started the Little German Band with his schoolmates when he was twelve, then a Dixieland band, and a nine-piece dance band known as The Silver Liners. He became enthralled by big bands and bebop bands of the 1950s. After graduating from Altoona Area High School in 1957, he spent the summer on a tour of state fairs in the Midwest with the conductor and members of the Ringling Brothers Circus Band. Paul Halley
Paul Halley (born 1952 in Romford, England) is a keyboardist, vocalist and composer. He is perhaps best known as being a member of and composer for the Paul Winter Consort. Biography Paul Halley was born in England in 1952. His father was a musician, and when he emigrated with his family to Canada, he sang in the choir of St. Matthew's Church, Ottawa. After leaving the Cathedral in 1989, Halley founded Joyful Noise, Inc., a non-profit organization, designed to teach children proper vocal technique, music theory, and musicianship. The two groups involved with the organization, Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus, are both still active. From July 2007 to December 2021 Halley served as Director of Music at both the University of King's College and All Saints Cathedral in Halifax, Nova Scotia. ''Earthbeat'' is a landmark album by saxophonist Paul Winter. Recorded and released in 1987, the album was a joint project between the Paul Winter Consort and the Dmitri Pokrovsky Ensemble from Russia, then the Soviet Union. Background The Paul Winter Consort first met the Pokrovsky Ensemble during a tour of the Soviet Union in September 1986 when they performed together during a concert at Moscow University. Immediately inspired by their performance, the two groups communicated, through interpreters, the idea of making more music together. After obtaining permission from the Russian music label Melodiya, the Consort began their collaboration with the Ensemble. The album was recorded in both Moscow and New York City. The two groups combined their musical styles to create an entirely new sound. Roger Searle Payne (born January 29, 1935) is an American biologist and environmentalist famous for the 1967 discovery (with Scott McVay) of whale song among humpback whales. Payne later became an important figure in the worldwide campaign to end commercial whaling. History Payne was born in New York, New York, and received his BA degree at Harvard University and his Ph.D. at Cornell. He spent the early years of his career studying echolocation in bats (and how their food, moths, avoid them) and auditory localization in owls.
