Whale Music (album)
''Whale Music'' is a 1992 studio album by Canadian rock band Rheostatics. It should not be confused with the soundtrack to the film '' Whale Music'', which was also composed by the band and released in 1994. A performance from their concert tour to support this album was released in 2005 as ''The Whale Music Concert, 1992'', a download-only album from Zunior Records. The album cover is part of a painting by guitarist Martin Tielli. Honours In 1996, the Canadian music magazine ''Chart'' conducted a reader poll to determine the greatest Canadian albums of all time. ''Whale Music'' placed fifth in that poll, behind only Sloan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and The Tragically Hip. When the magazine conducted a follow-up poll in 2000, ''Whale Music'' placed fourth behind Mitchell, Young and Sloan, and was followed in fifth by the band's 1991 album '' Melville''. Rheostatics
Rheostatics are a Canadian indie rock band. They were formed in 1978, and actively performed from 1980 until disbanding in 2007. After a number of reunion performances at special events, Rheostatics reformed in late 2016, introducing new songs and performing semi-regularly. Although they had only one Top 40 hit, "Claire" in 1995, they were simultaneously one of Canada's most influential and unconventional rock bands, a band whose eclectic take on pop and rock music has been described both as iconic and iconoclastic. Tim Vesely
Tim Vesely (born 10 December 1963) is a Canadian musician and songwriter. He is best known as a founding member of the indie rock band Rheostatics, in which he shared vocal duties with bandmates Dave Bidini and Martin Tielli. Vesely wrote much of the band's conventionally pop and rock-oriented material, including both of the band's most successful singles, "Claire" and "Bad Time to Be Poor". Dave Bidini (born September 11, 1963) is a Canadian musician and writer. Originally from Etobicoke, Ontario, he was a founding member of the rock band Rheostatics, and currently performs with Bidiniband. In addition, he has published several books about music, travel and sports, and has written feature journalism pieces and columns for numerous Canadian magazines and newspapers. He is the only Canadian to have been nominated for all three of Canada's main entertainment awards, the Gemini Award for television work, the Genie Awards for film work and the Juno Awards for music, as well as being nominated on Canada's national book awards program, ''Canada Reads''. Tim Mech
Tim Mech is a Canadian rock guitarist and guitar technician. He is best known as a sometime collaborator with Rheostatics, for whom he was also a guitar tech for many years, starting around 1988. Starting around 1982, he was associated with Ottawa punk rock bands such as Civil Terror, Snuff Maximus and Deep Six. Mech later moved back to Toronto, his home town, forming The Bookmen with Dave Bookman, and working with Rheostatics. Mech is credited on Rheostatics' record ''Whale Music'' and was featured in their video for " Stolen Car". Mech fronts his own band, Tim Mech's Peep-Show, in which he plays the Weissenborn Hawaiian slide guitar and sings. He is also the principal songwriter for the band. ''The Top 100 Canadian Albums'' is a book by journalist Bob Mersereau, published in 2007 by Goose Lane Editions. Mersereau surveyed 600 music journalists, retailers, musicians and disc jockeys of all ages, from all parts of Canada, who each submitted a list of 10 favourite Canadian albums released between 1957 and 2007.
