Whakatāne District Council or Whakatane District Council ( mi, Kia Whakatāne au i ahau) is the territorial authority for the Whakatāne District of New Zealand. The mayor presides over the Whakatane District Council, which was first formed in 1976 following an amalgamation, with further changes taking place in 1989. Whakatāne District is a territorial authority district on the North Island of New Zealand. The Whakatāne District Council is headquartered in the largest town, Whakatāne. The district falls within the Bay of Plenty region. Judy Turner has been the mayor of Whakatāne since the 2019 local elections. The district has an area of 4465 square kilometres, of which 4450 square kilometres are land. The population was as of History A Whakatane County Council was established in 1876, and covered a wider area than the present district, including Ōpōtiki. Nándor Tánczos
Nándor Steven Tánczos (, hu, Tánczos Nándor; born 29 May 1966) is a New Zealand social ecologist, researcher, educator, activist and political commentator. He is currently a councillor in the Whakatāne District Council. He is also co-director of He Puna Manawa social and political change agency. Tánczos was a member of the New Zealand Parliament from 1999 to 2008, and represented the Green Party as a list MP. Early life The younger of two sons, Tánczos was born in King George Hospital, London, and lived in Ilford, Hackney, and Clayhall prior to the family's emigration to New Zealand after Christmas 1973. Judith Anne Turner (born 2 August 1956) is a New Zealand politician who was the deputy leader of United Future New Zealand. She was a member of the New Zealand House of Representatives as a list MP from 2002 to 2008, and the mayor of Whakatāne from 2019 to 2022. Member of Parliament Turner was first elected as a United Future list MP at the 2002 New Zealand general election, 2002 election. In December 2004 United Future party members chose her as their deputy leader.
