The ''Westport News'' is an independently-owned evening newspaper published in Westport, New Zealand. It is published on weekdays, and is one of New Zealand's smallest independent newspapers. The ''Westport News'' is distributed from Karamea in the north to Punakaiki in the south and as far inland as Reefton. History In the 1860s Westport had two newspapers: the ''Westport Times and Buller Express'', started by Job L. Munson and John Tyrell in December 1866, and the ''Westport Evening Star'', started in December 1867. (These merged in 1892, becoming the daily ''Westport Times and Star'', which became the ''Buller Times'' before ceasing publication in 1941.) A teleprinter (teletypewriter, teletype or TTY) is an electromechanical device that can be used to send and receive typed messages through various communications channels, in both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint configurations. Initially they were used in telegraphy, which developed in the late 1830s and 1840s as the first use of electrical engineering, though teleprinters were not used for telegraphy until 1887 at the earliest. Seddonville
Seddonville is a lightly populated locality on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is most famous for the historical role it played in New Zealand's coal mining industry. Geography Seddonville is in the isolated north of the West Coast in the foothills of the Glasgow Range, on the southern bank of the Mokihinui River. To the west are Summerlea and Mokihinui on the coast of the Tasman Sea, and to the north is Corbyvale on the road to Karamea. State Highway 67 ends just before reaching Seddonville. In 1911 Seddonville's population was 426, 222 in 1951, 70 in 1976 and in 2013 its 3 meshblocks totalled 53. A rare mollusc, ''Powelliphanta lignaria rotella'', is found only in the Seddonville area. Richard Seddon
Richard John Seddon (22 June 1845 – 10 June 1906) was a New Zealand politician who served as the 15th premier (prime minister) of New Zealand from 1893 until his death. In office for thirteen years, he is to date New Zealand's longest-serving head of government. Seddon was born in Eccleston near St Helens, Lancashire, in England. He arrived in New Zealand in 1866 to join an uncle in the West Coast goldfields. His prominence in local politics gained him a seat in the House of Representatives in 1879. Seddon became a key member of the Liberal Party under the leadership of John Ballance, but differed from him greatly due to his conservativism clashing with Ballance's progressivism. When the Liberal Government came to power in 1891 Seddon was appointed to several portfolios, including Minister of Public Works. Becky Manawatu (born 1982) is a New Zealand writer of Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mamoe, Waitaha, and Pākehā background. In 2020, she won two Ockham New Zealand Book Awards for her first novel, ''Auē'' and Best Crime Novel at the 2020 Ngaio Marsh Awards. Biography Manawatu was born Becky Wixon in June 1982 in Nelson, New Zealand, and raised in Waimangaroa on the West Coast of the South Island, 15 minutes from Westport, attending Waimangaroa Primary School. Coast FM is a local radio station in Westport, New Zealand, to most of the West Coast Region. The station began in 1995 as Radio Fifeshire Westport in partnership with Fifeshire FM in Nelson, and started broadcasting in Hokitika and Greymouth in 1996. The station was rebranded as Coast FM in 1999, but is not related to Coast network that broadcasts in other parts of the country.
