Weston Academy
Weston Academy was an Isle of Wight primary school run by the Academies Enterprise Trust academy chain. It closed in 2015. History Previously called Weston Community Primary School, the school was located in Totland Bay in the far West of the Isle of Wight The school has always been a small school with fewer than 100 pupils. In 2011 it was threatened with closure by the local authority and the National Secular Society (NSS) stepped in to ask for a reprieve In order to avoid closure by the local authority, the primary school became an academy with the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET), becoming the first Primary Academy on the Isle of Wight. Weston had been graded as 'good' by OFSTED but as an AET academy the standards declined and it was graded as 'inadequate' (Special Measures) in 2015. Academies Enterprise Trust
The Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) is a multi-academy trust in England. It is a non-profit, educational charitable trust, which sponsors schools with academy status. History Formally established in 2008 by the Greensward Charitable Trust (established in 1996 to support Greensward School). The first school in the trust was Greensward Academy, at Hockley, Essex. The Trust began growing in 2008 with 3 schools.See the Corporate Plan 2014-2017 on the following page At its largest the chain numbered 76 schools. By 2015, AET had contracted to 68 schools. Academy Chain
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. Academies are self-governing non-profit charitable trusts and may receive additional support from personal or corporate sponsors, either financially or in kind. Academies are inspected and follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs and exclusions as other state schools and students sit the same national exams. They have more autonomy with the National Curriculum, but do have to ensure that their curriculum is broad and balanced, and that it includes the core subjects of English, maths and science. Totland Bay
Totland Bay is a bay on the west coast of the Isle of Wight, England. It lies to the west of the village of Totland from which it takes its name. It faces north west and has a shoreline, which has a beach, concrete seawall, groynes and derelict Victorian pier. It stretches from Warden Point in the north to Hatherwood Point in the south-west. The seabed is a mixture of mud and sand, clear of many underwater outcrops, this makes it a popular anchorage point for vessels. The beach is predominantly shingle. Since 2001 the quality of the beach has been high enough for it to be awarded the Seaside Award Flag. In the summer, litter and seaweed are removed each day, with the latter being composted by local farmers. Currently, the pier is being refurbished to re-open the cafe which was there before.
