Westminster Presbyterian Church Of Australia
The Westminster Presbyterian Church is a small but growing Presbyterian denomination in Australia. It is based in Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, and has one congregation in the Australian Capital Territory. History The Westminster Presbyterian Church grew from informal Bible study meetings organized in Perth in 1970 by Rev David Cross, who had been sent to Western Australia by World Presbyterian Missions, the mission arm of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod in the United States, to work among Aboriginal people in the country town of Brookton. When that work did not progress as expected, David Cross came to Perth and commenced work among the people of that city at the request of local Presbyterians who were unhappy with developments in their own denomination. The Westminster Presbyterian Church in the United States (WPCUS) was a Presbyterian denomination, founded in United States in 2006, by Rev. Brian Schwertley, formerly affiliated with Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church and other pastors formerly affiliated with other Presbyterian denominations. The founders were particularly concerned with the perceived spread of liberal teaching within Presbyterianism in the United States and in particular with Federal Vision theology, which they believe supplies a different understanding of doctrines such as justification and the perseverance of the saints. The denomination existed until the 2010s. Westminster Presbyterian Church of Alexandria, Virginia, U.S. located at the corner of Cameron Mills Road and Monticello Boulevard in the city's North Ridge section. Westminster Presbyterian Church is a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Mid-Atlantic Synod and the National Capital Presbytery. History The congregation was founded in 1939. Its initial colonial-style edifice was built in 1942. The current sanctuary was constructed in 1952 to accommodate the rapidly growing congregation; the old sanctuary became the chapel. The cornerstone of the new building was laid by then President Harry S. Truman. In 1961, a large education building was added to accommodate Sunday school classes, music facilities, additional office spaces, and meeting areas for numerous church programs. Peter Marshall (preacher)
Peter Marshall (May 27, 1902 – January 26, 1949) was a Scottish-American preacher, pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. and was appointed as Chaplain of the United States Senate. He is remembered popularly from the success of ''A Man Called Peter'' (1951), a biography written by his widow, Catherine Marshall, and the book's 1955 film adaptation, which was nominated for an Academy Award for its cinematography. Early life and education Born in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, a poverty-stricken coal-mining community, where he was reared by his mother and stepfather. From an early age, he decided he would be a missionary to China. To meet the educational requirements, he enrolled in evening classes while working in the mines by day, but his progress was slow. The former Westminster Presbyterian Church (also known as The First Spiritualist Temple) is a historic church building at 77 S. 6th Street in Columbus, Ohio. Built in 1857 in the Romanesque Revival style, it was originally home to Westminster Presbyterian Church. Spiritualists acquired the property after Westminster Presbyterian merged with another church circa 1900. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Westminster Presbyterian Church is a congregation and building in Dayton, Ohio. The 1926 building was designed by Ralph Adams Cram and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. The congregation was established in 1799 and was the first church formed in Dayton. Today the congregation boasts over 1000 members and holds regular services each Sunday along with many additional musical and religious events throughout the year. Congregation Dayton, Ohio, was first settled shortly after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville by a small group who travelled ten days from Cincinnati. In 1798 a member of the Transylvania Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church, William Robinson, came to Dayton to establish a church.
