Westmeath County Hurling Team
The Westmeath county hurling team represents Westmeath in hurling and is governed by Westmeath GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the Joe McDonagh Cup and the National Hurling League. Westmeath's home ground is Cusack Park, Mullingar. The team's manager is Joe Fortune. The team has never won the Leinster Senior Championship, the All-Ireland Senior Championship or the National League. The team is nicknamed the Lake men. History The Westmeath hurlers experienced a successful period in the mid-1930s, when they won the Leinster League twice in succession, the Junior Championship in 1936, and beat Laois to qualify for the 1937 Leinster Senior final. The Kilkenny County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (Kilkenny GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Cill Chainnigh) is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Kilkenny. Lough Lene Gaels GAA
Lough Lene Gaels (Irish: ''Gaeil Loch Léinn'') is a Gaelic Athletic Association club, based in Collinstown, County Westmeath, Ireland. Club history Lough Lene Gaels was founded as a hurling club late in 1969 as a result of an amalgamation between the Collinstown, Fore, Glenidan and Rickardstown hurling clubs. Their played first match in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Championship resulted in a 5-17 to 5-1 win over Delvin, July 1970. First victorious honour occurred in early 1972 resulting from a postponed 1971 Junior hurling league final. Raharney were defeated 4-10 to 2-3 on that final. First championship honour came in 1973 when the Junior title was won by defeating Castletown-Geoghegan 7-3 to 2-3. The awaited breakthrough at senior level arrived 1975 with vanquishing Raharney in the final. Castletown Geoghegan GAA
Castletown Geoghegan is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Ireland. The club first fielded a championship team in 1920 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. In senior hurling Castletown Geoghegan compete annually in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Championship, which they have won fourteen times as of 2022. The club also competes in various other championships in all grades within Westmeath. History Beginnings The first record of hurling being played in Castletown Geoghegan dates back to 1911 when games were played in Loughlum. These were not on an organized basis but soon after a Kilkenny man named Mick Byrne who worked with CIÉ at Castletown Station brought his skill and knowledge of hurling to the area. Joe Quaid
Joseph M. Quaid (born 10 April 1972) is an Irish hurling manager and former player. He was the manager of the Westmeath senior team in 2019. Born in Feohanagh, County Limerick, Quaid was introduced to hurling by his father, an All-Ireland medal winner with the Limerick junior team. At schools level he played with Newcastle West Vocational School, while simultaneously playing at juvenile and underage levels with Feohanagh. Eventually playing with the club's senior team, Quaid subsequently transferred to the Murroe-Boher club where he won one championship medal. Quaid made his debut on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Limerick minor team. He later joined the under-21 side but enjoyed little success in either of these grades. Quaid made his senior debut during the 1994 championship. Shane O'Brien (hurler)
Shane O'Brien (born 2004) is an Irish hurler. At club level he plays with Kilmallock, while he has also lined out at inter-county level with various Limerick teams. Career O'Brien first played hurling to a high standard as a student at Ardscoil Rís in Limerick. He was joint-captain of the college's senior team that won the Dr Croke Cup after a defeat of St Kieran's College in 2022. O'Brien later lined out with the Mary Immaculate College freshers' team. At club level, O'Brien first played hurling at juvenile and underage levels with the Kilmallock, before joining the club's senior team. He first appeared on the inter-county scene with Limerick during a two-year tenure with the minor team and won a Munster MHC medal in 2020. O'Brien later progressed to the under-20 team and was at right corner-forward when the team was beaten by Kilkenny in the 2022 All-Ireland under-20 final.
