Westhampton Station
Westhampton is a station along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It is on Station Road and Depot Road in Westhampton, New York, just west of Old Riverhead Road and south of the Francis S. Gabreski Airport. Westhampton station was originally built between February and March 1870 along what was then the Sag Harbor Branch. In 1905 a second station was built when the first one was moved to a private location. The station burned down in 1986, but was rebuilt sometime between then and the year 2000. Currently the station has a high-level sheltered platform. When Quogue station was closed on March 16, 1998, Westhampton was one of the two stations that replaced it. The other was Hampton Bays. Westhampton is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 3,079 at the 2010 census. Westhampton is in the Town of Southampton. Geography Westhampton is located at (40.822894, -72.664306). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which is land and , or 14.74%, is water. Climate Westhampton has an oceanic climate (''Cfb'') under the Köppen climate classification, with moderately cold winters and warm summers. The plant hardiness is more similar to a humid continental climate (''Dfb'') although winter days are mild enough that Westhampton is unlikely to maintain long-term snow cover in a normal winter. Due to the lack of an urban environment and being away from the immediate coastline, the area has a lot colder nights than New York City. Side Platform
A side platform (also known as a marginal platform or a single-face platform) is a platform positioned to the side of one or more railway tracks or guideways at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. The Montauk Branch is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch runs the length of Long Island, 115 miles (185 km) from Long Island City on the west to Montauk on the east. Sag Harbor Branch
The Sag Harbor Branch was a branch of the Long Island Rail Road that was the eastern terminal on the south shore line of Long Island from 1869 to 1895 and then was a spur from Bridgehampton to Sag Harbor, New York from 1895 to 1939. It originally continued west from Bridgehampton along the current Montauk Branch to Eastport and used what later became the Manorville Branch to the Main Line at Manorville. History The line was conceived and surveyed in 1854. In 1869 LIRR president Oliver Charlick wanted the branch to head off plans by the South Side Railroad to extend their line beyond Patchogue. A map of the branch can be seen along with the proposed SSRRLI extension from Patchogue. The original plans called for the branch to leave the Main Line at Riverhead. But Riverhead refused to pay the LIRR for the benefits of being at a junction, so the west end was moved to Manorville in the pine barrens in 1869. Hampton Bays is a railroad station along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It is on Good Ground Road between Springville Road and Suffolk CR 32 (Ponquogue Avenue) in Hampton Bays, New York. Parking is free and located on Good Ground Road. History The Hampton Bays station was originally built along what was then the Sag Harbor Branch on December 20, 1869 , June 2004 Edition (although some sources claim it was in February 1871) as "Good Ground." It was the terminus of the line until the summer of 1870 when it was extended to Sag Harbor. The station was renamed "Hampton Bays" in June 1922, but the original name can be found along one of the streets where it is located on. The station burned on November 4, 1873. The second station was opened on January 10, 1874 and closed in 1913, but used as an "express house" for the 3rd depot, which opened in the Summer 1913.
