Western Philippines University
The Western Philippines University ( fil, Pamantasang Pampamahalaan ng Kanluraning Pilipinas) is a state higher education institution located in Palawan. The university began as the Aborlan Farm Settlement School for the Tagbanuas (an indigenous cultural community of Palawan) in 1910. It became the Aborlan Agricultural High School in 1928 and then Palawan Regional Agricultural School in 1960. It was renamed Palawan National School in 1962 and became the Palawan National Agricultural College in 1963. Its name was again changed to State Polytechnic College of Palawan in 1995 by virtue of RA 8012, and in 2004, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed RA 9260 converting it to Western Philippines University. Aborlan, officially the Municipality of Aborlan ( tgl, Bayan ng Aborlan), is a 1st class municipality in the province of , Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 38,736 people. It lies in a vast plain between the Sulu Sea and the mountains, south of Puerto Princesa City. Aborlan became a municipality on June 28, 1949, by Executive Order No. 232. In 1951, the municipality lost the barrios of Berong and Alfonso XII when those were transferred to the newly created town of Quezon. Culion, Palawan
Culion, officially the Municipality of Culion ( tgl, Bayan ng Culion), is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Palawan, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 23,213 people. Culion consists primarily of Culion Island as well as 41 minor surrounding islands, as part of the Calamian group of islands. It was a former leprosarium, starting in 1906 under the American colonial regime until the American commonwealth of the Philippines era. Although leprosy on the island-town was abolished in the 1980s, it was only in 2006 when it was declared a leprosy-free area by the World Health Organization.
