The Western Australian Club is a defunct social club founded in in Perth, Western Australia. Named Exchange Club until 1897 and then West Australian Club until 1979, it ceased operating in . History The Western Australian Club began in 1893 as a gentlemen's club in the shape of a limited company with capital of, "five hundred pounds divided into 500 shares of £1 each." The original Memorandum of Association described the purpose as: By 1894 there were 310 members, drawn from the rich and powerful of Western Australia. The gentlemen's club ethos was well established: In the 1950s membership continued to include many names from business, development, politics and the history of Western Australia. The financial fortunes of the club also tended to rise and fall with the fortunes of the state. By the 1960s the state itself was changing. There was rapid economic growth in non-traditional areas. Ross McLarty
Sir Duncan Ross McLarty, (17 March 1891 – 22 December 1962) was an Australian politician and the 17th Premier of Western Australia. Early life McLarty was born in Pinjarra, Western Australia, the youngest of seven children of Edward McLarty, a farmer and grazier and member of the Western Australian Legislative Council, and his wife Mary Jane, née Campbell. He attended Pinjarra State School and the Perth Boys' High School. On 12 January 1916 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at the Blackboy Hill depot. On 27 March he was promoted to corporal and assigned to the 44th Battalion, arriving in England on 21 July. The 44th Battalion departed England for the Western Front on 25 November 1916. McLarty was promoted to sergeant on 29 March 1917. In June 1918, McLarty was awarded the Military Medal for "bravery in the field" on 25 January 1918 at Passchendaele.The service record does not provide the location of McLarty on 25 January 1918. Weld Club
The Weld Club is a private male-only social club in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1871 as a gentlemen's club, it is named after Frederick Weld, the chronologically first patron of the club and the Governor of Western Australia at the time. Building , the club occupies a building designed by Talbot Hobbs and constructed in 1892 by the Bunning Brothers, the founders of Bunnings, for the organisation. It is situated at the corner of The Esplanade and Barrack Street, immediately across the street from Stirling Gardens. Appraised for conservation work, it is heritage-listed and has a number of histories of both the club and building published. Karrakatta Club
The Karrakatta Club is a female-only women's club in Perth, Western Australia. Established in 1894, it was the first women's club in Australia. History The Karrakatta Club was founded in 1894 by members of the St George Reading Circle. The St George Reading Circle was formed around 1887 for the purpose of exchanging and discussing reading material, and debating current affairs. Following a visit from an American woman named Dr Emily Ryder, the Circle decided to form a new club modelled on the Education Clubs that were popular in America. The objective of the Club was to bring into one body the women of the community for mutual improvement which included involvement in local issues affecting women at that time, social justice issues, and social engagement. Charles Court
Sir Charles Walter Michael Court, (29 September 1911 – 22 December 2007) was a Western Australian politician, and the 21st Premier of Western Australia from 1974 to 1982. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Court's family emigrated from his birthplace Crawley, Sussex, England, to Perth when he was 6 months old. He went to primary school in Leederville, and then to Perth Boys School. His Salvation Army parents induced him to play the cornet in their Sunday parades and he became a proficient player. He began formal music training at 12 and became a member of the RSL Memorial Band. He also inherited a strong union background from his father, a plumber, and joined the Musicians Union at the age of 14, playing in annual May Day parades. In 1930 he competed in the national band competition held in Tanunda and won the brass solo competition, the "Champion of Champions". Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. Major General Sir Newton James Moore, (17 May 1870 – 28 October 1936) was an Australian politician, businessman and army officer. He served as the eighth Premier of Western Australia from 1906 to 1910 and, following service in the First World War, was a member of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1918 to 1932. He was the father of Sir Rodney Moore. Early life and career Newton Moore was born in Fremantle, Western Australia, son of James Moore, auctioneer and later mayor of Bunbury, and Elizabeth Dawson, schoolteacher.
