Western Australian Bank, York
The Western Australian Bank building in York is the third oldest surviving bank building in Western Australia and, until 27 September 2019, was the oldest still in-use as a bank. History The building was designed by the architect, Talbot Hobbs, in Victorian Academic Classical style. Hobbs designed other banks for the Western Australian Bank. The land on which the building stands was purchased from the estate of William Kett in 1889. The bank opened for business on 24 August 1889. James Rose was its first manager. Above the bank office is the manager's residence. At the time of its opening, the bank was next door to Edwards & Co's chemist's shop.Eastern Districts Chronicle, 24 August 1889, page 4. Avon Terrace it is the main street of the town of York, Western Australia, and is lined with heritage buildings. Avon Terrace west side walking north from the Town Hall to Ford Street *The Imperial Hotel (1886) was the first hotel to be built in York that adopted the new "Australian hotel" style in hotel design, with a dominant position on a main street corner block, high and ornate double verandahs and a main entrance onto the street. Talbot Hobbs
Lieutenant General Sir Joseph John Talbot Hobbs, (24 August 1864 – 21 April 1938) was an Australian architect and First World War general. Early life Hobbs was born in London, the son of Joseph and his wife Frances Ann Hobbs (née Wilson). Educated at St Mary's church school, Merton, Surrey, Hobbs joined the volunteer artillery in 1883. He also worked as draughtsman for a builder, John Hurst. In 1886, he emigrated with Hurst to Western Australia and established an architectural practice in Perth in 1887. Hobbs designed many of the well known public buildings in Perth and Fremantle, including the Weld Club, the Savoy Hotel and the Perth Masonic Lodge. Hobbs was treasurer of the Western Australian Institute of Architects in 1896, and later became the institute's president from 1909 to 1911. Western Australian Bank, Albany Branch
The Western Australian Bank, Albany, also known as the Haynes Robinson building, is a heritage listed building located on Stirling Terrace overlooking Princess Royal Harbour in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was built in the Federation Academic Classical style and originally housed the local branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia. The two storey building has many features that are identical to those of the eastern neighbouring building. The building is constructed on a rusticated base, there are two entrance doors with classically derived casements made up of plain pilasters, cornices, scrolled brackets and tympanum. A pair of arched windows are found between the doors. A deep cornice was set above the entablature, there is an open balustrade at parapet level, with piers topped with urns at each end and a raised panel buttressed by scrolls and tympanum above.
