The Western Australia Police Star was established to recognise Western Australia Police personnel who are killed or seriously injured whilst carrying out their primary functions on or off duty. Criteria The medal is awarded to Western Australia Police sworn personnel who are killed or seriously injured whilst carrying out their primary functions whether on or off duty. The award consists of a medal, miniature, and ribbon bar. No clasps are issued with the medal. Description The Western Australia Police Star is a circular bronze-gold coloured medal, 38 mm in diameter, surmounted with St Edward's Crown. St Edward's Crown
St Edward's Crown is the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. Named after Saint Edward the Confessor, versions of it have traditionally been used to crown English and British monarchs at their coronations since the 13th century. The original crown was a holy relic kept at Westminster Abbey, Edward's burial place, until the regalia were either sold or melted down when Parliament abolished the monarchy in 1649, during the English Civil War. The coat of arms of Western Australia is the official coat of arms of the Australian state of Western Australia. It was granted by a royal warrant of Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia dated 17 March 1969. Description The shield has a silver (argent) field, with a rippled blue (azure) and silver (argent) base. A black swan in its natural colours swims on the upper blue ripple. The crest is the Royal Crown in its proper colours on a wreath or torse of black (sable) and gold (or) between two kangaroo paw flowers in their natural colours of red and green. Karl O'Callaghan
Karl Joseph O'Callaghan (born 1956 in England) served from 2004 to 2017 as Commissioner of the Western Australia Police. Biography O'Callaghan was born in 1956 in England. In 1970 he moved with his family to Australia where he attended Kalamunda Senior High School. After completing year 12 he joined the Western Australia Police Service as a Police Cadet in 1973 and in November 1975 was inducted into the Western Australia Police Academy. In January 1976 he graduated as Dux of his Academy class. ''Murray Valley encephalitis virus'' (MVEV) is a zoonotic flavivirus endemic to northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. It is the causal agent of Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE; previously known as Australian encephalitis or Australian X disease). In humans, it can cause permanent neurological disease or death. MVEV is related to Kunjin virus, which has a similar ecology, but a lower morbidity rate. Although the arbovirus is endemic to Northern Australia, it has occasionally spread to the southern states during times of heavy rainfall during the summer monsoon season via seasonal flooding of the Murray-Darling River system. Balgo, Western Australia
Balgo, previously Balgo Hills and Balgo Mission, is a community in Western Australia that is linked with both the Great Sandy Desert and the Tanami Desert. The community is in the Shire of Halls Creek, off the Tanami Road, and was established by German missionaries in 1939. In the Balgo's population numbered 430. History The community was established following the arrival of German Pallottine Catholic missionaries in the region in 1939. Following the outbreak of World War II, the Australian government designated the missionaries "enemy aliens" and their radio transmitter and firearms were confiscated by police.
