Westerly Armory
The Westerly Armory is an historic United States National Guard, National Guard armory (military), armory building located on Railroad Avenue, west of downtown Westerly, Rhode Island. History The armory was built in 1901 to replace another destroyed armory. It was designed by William R. Walker & Son, a firm that designed several other armories and public buildings in Rhode Island during the late 19th and early 20th century. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the fall of 1996. The "Armory serves presently as a museum of military and community memorabilia, a social and cultural center for the area, and home to the Westerly Band (oldest civic band in the country) and its historic library." Westerly, Rhode Island
Westerly is a town on the southwestern shoreline of Washington County, Rhode Island, first settled by English colonists in 1661 and incorporated as a municipality in 1669. It is a beachfront community on the south shore of the state with a population of 23,359 as of the 2020 census. The Pawcatuck River flows on the western border of Westerly and was once renowned for its own species of Westerly salmon, three of which are on the town's official seal. The river flows from inland, emptying into Little Narragansett Bay. It also serves as the boundary between Westerly and Pawcatuck, Connecticut. Three large salt ponds lie along the coast of Westerly which serve as shallow, reef-like pools whose outer walls form the long, white beaches for which the town is renowned. Pawtucket Armory
The Pawtucket Armory is an historic armory building at 172 Exchange Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. One of the major works of William R. Walker & Son, it was built in 1894–5. Built of red brick with granite and limestone trim, it has a distinctive main block, with crenellated towers at the corners, and is prominently sited near Pawtucket's central business district. It has a Richardsonian Romanesque entry, recessed under a round archway with wrought iron gates. The armory drill hall extends to behind the building along Fountain Street. From 2005 to 2010, the armory housed the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Performing and Visual Arts. It is currently home to the Pawtucket Armory Arts Center.
