West Ward School (Gas City, Indiana)
West Ward School, also known as the West Building Mississinewa Community Schools, is a historic school building located at Gas City, Grant County, Indiana. It was built between 1900 and 1902, and is a -story, rectangular, Richardsonian Romanesque style brick and stone building. It features a symmetrical main facade with round towers at each corner topped by conical roofs. ''Note:'' This includes and Accompanying photographs. Gas City, Indiana
Gas City is a city in Grant County, Indiana, along the Mississinewa River. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. History Gas City was first known as Harrisburg when settled on May 25, 1867, by Noah Harris. It became something of a boom town when natural gas was found in the area in 1887. The Gas City Land Company was founded on March 21, 1892, and the town of about 150 people changed its name to Gas City a few days later. However, as of 2022 much of the gas is depleted. (See Indiana gas boom.) The Gas City High School, Thompson-Ray House, and West Ward School are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Gas City annually hosts the Ducktail Run Rod and Custom Car Show in the Fall. The "Ducktail Run," as it is known to locals, is a large car show featuring vehicles from 1972 and older. Grant County, Indiana
Grant County is a County (United States), county in central Indiana in the United States Midwest. At the time of the 2020 census, the population was 66,674. The county seat is Marion, Indiana, Marion. Important paleontology, paleontological discoveries, dating from the Pliocene epoch, have been made at the Pipe Creek Sinkhole in Grant County. History Grant County was formed in 1831 by settlers from Kentucky and Virginia. It was named for Captains Samuel and Moses Grant of Kentucky, who were killed fighting indigenous warriors north of the Ohio River. Their home county was also named for them, Grant County, Kentucky. In 1831, Martin Boots and David Branson each donated 30 acres of land to begin a settlement called Marion. Richardsonian Romanesque is a style of Romanesque Revival architecture named after the American architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886). The revival style incorporates 11th and 12th century southern French, Spanish, and Italian Romanesque characteristics. Richardson first used elements of the style in his Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo, New York, designed in 1870. Multiple architects followed in this style in the late 19th century; Richardsonian Romanesque later influenced modern styles of architecture as well.
