West Virginia Route 51
West Virginia Route 51 (WV 51) is a state highway that runs west to east from Berkeley County to Jefferson County in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. The western terminus is at WV 45 northwest of Gerrardstown. The eastern terminus is at an interchange with U.S. Route 340 (US 340) and WV 9 east of downtown Charles Town. US 340 continues to the east on the same roadway as WV 51. Route description WV 51 begins at an intersection with WV 45 at Mills Gap on top of North Mountain in Berkeley County, where the road continues north as CR 20 (Buck Hill Road). From this intersection, WV 51 heads south as two-lane undivided Gerrardstown Road and descends the forested mountain. It is owned by Gaming and Leisure Properties and operated by Penn Entertainment. History Background and development Founded by Albert and Joseph Boyle as Jefferson County Races, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races became America’s first winter race meet upon its opening in December 1933. The Boyles spent $160,000 to build the facility (a huge sum during the height of the Great Depression) believing that it would draw large crowds due to it being the only northern track to hold races during the winter season, and they were right. Even with freezing temperatures and odds being calculated by slide rule, the grandstand overflowed. Jefferson County Courthouse (West Virginia)
The Jefferson County Courthouse is a historic building in Charles Town, West Virginia, USA. The building is historically notable as the site of two trials for treason: that of John Brown in 1859 (treason against Virginia), and those of unionizing coal miners from Mingo County, West Virginia (treason against West Virginia), a consequence of the Battle of Blair Mountain, whose trials were moved from the southern part of the state in 1922 as a result of a change of venue. Description The courthouse is a red brick building in the Georgian style with a prominent Doric pedimented porch. It has an unusual clock tower with a square dome that resembles Second Empire structures. The courthouse is set on a high stone foundation, facing onto a small yard enclosed by a metal fence. West Virginia Route 115
West Virginia Route 115 (WV 115) is a state highway running north to south in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. The southern terminus of the route is at WV 9 near Mannings. The northern terminus is near WV 9 near Baker Heights at an intersection with Opequon Lane. The route mostly follows a previous alignment of WV 9. Route description WV 115 starts at WV 9/CR 32 (Chestnut Hill Road) at the Virginia state line near Keyes Gap, although it is unsigned at this intersection. It travels through the communities of Mannings and Mountain Mission and goes north of Shannondale before crossing the Shenandoah River and traveling through Mechanicstown. Harewood (West Virginia)
Harewood is one of several houses in the vicinity of Charles Town, West Virginia built for members of the Washington family. Description The house was designed by John Ariss for Samuel Washington in 1770, using a center-hall, single-pile plan. The two-story limestone house has a raised basement and flanking stone wings. Exterior details are simple, with only a modillioned cornice at the eaves of the shallow hipped roof. The interior is detailed in the manner of the Tidewater-region houses that Washington and Arris were familiar with. Interior detailing is extensive with Doric pilasters in the main downstairs rooms. Middleway is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson County, West Virginia, United States, in the lower Shenandoah Valley. As of the 2010 census, its population was 441. History On January 15, 1786, the Virginia General Assembly passed an act establishing the town of Smithfield on land owned by John Smith II and William Smith. A post office was established in 1806; and since there was another town called Smithfield in the state, a different name was needed to avoid confusion. Because Smithfield had become a center of commerce between several other towns, the post office became known as "Middleway."
