West Norwalk
West Norwalk is a residential neighborhood in the city of Norwalk, Connecticut in the Connecticut Panhandle region of Fairfield County. It lies in the western central part of the city. Geography According to the West Norwalk Association West Norwalk is defined by New Canaan Avenue ( Route 123) to the North, West Cedar Street to the South and the town lines of Darien and New Canaan to the West. The eastern boundary is an irregular line generally defined by North Taylor Avenue, Steppingstone Road and Maher Drive. However, some of the businesses along the Boston Post Road (Connecticut Avenue) south of Cedar Street consider themselves to be in West Norwalk. Informally West Norwalk is bounded to the South by Brookside and Rowayton, to the west by Darien, to the northwest by New Canaan, to the north by Silvermine, and to the east by the Broad River neighborhood of Norwalk. The Boston Post Road was a system of mail-delivery routes between New York City and Boston, Massachusetts that evolved into one of the first major highways in the United States. Silvermine is an unincorporated community in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States that extends across three southwestern Connecticut towns: Norwalk, New Canaan and Wilton. The name "Silvermine" comes from old legends of a silver mine in the area, although no silver has ever been found. Rowayton is an affluent coastal village in the city of Norwalk, Connecticut, roughly from New York City. Route 123 is a secondary state highway in southwestern Connecticut from Norwalk to the New York state line near the town of Lewisboro. Connecticut Panhandle
The Connecticut panhandle is the southwestern appendage of Connecticut, where it abuts New York State. It is contained entirely in Fairfield County and includes all of Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan, and Darien, as well as parts of Norwalk and Wilton. It has some of the most expensive residential real estate in the United States. The irregularity in the boundary is the result of territorial disputes in the late 17th century, culminating with New York giving up its claim to this area, whose residents considered themselves part of Connecticut. Area codes 203 and 475 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Connecticut. The numbering plan area (NPA) is mostly coextensive with the Connecticut portion of the New York metropolitan area, and comprises most of Fairfield County, all of New Haven County, and a small portion of Litchfield County. When the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) established the first nationwide numbering plan in 1947, Connecticut received only a single area code, 203, of the 86 original North American area codes. On August 28, 1995 the state was divided into two NPAs, reducing the area of 203 to today's extent and adding area code 860 for the region outside.
