West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School
West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School (also informally known as West Side High School or simply West Side) is the only high school within the West Lafayette city limits, and is administered by the West Lafayette Community School Corporation. West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School was constructed in 1939 of cream brick and glass at a cost of $225,000, and was remodeled in the late 1990s. The school is located near Purdue University, and the children of many Purdue faculty and staff attend West Side. In 2012, the school was ranked as the 2nd and 4th best public high school in Indiana by '' U.S. News & World Report'' and ''Newsweek'', respectively. As of 2021, the high school was ranked in U.S. News & World Report as 2nd in Indiana and 239th nationwide. West Lafayette, Indiana
West Lafayette () is a city in Wabash Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States, about northwest of the state capital of Indianapolis and southeast of Chicago. West Lafayette is directly across the Wabash River from its sister city, Lafayette. As of the 2020 census, its population was 44,595. It is the most densely populated city in Indiana and is home to Purdue University. History Augustus Wylie laid out a town in 1836 in the Wabash River floodplain south of the present Levee. Due to regular flooding of the site, Wylie's town was never built. The present city was formed in 1888 by the merger of the adjacent suburban towns of Chauncey, Oakwood, and Kingston, located on a bluff across the Wabash River from Lafayette, Indiana. Tom Moore (director)
Tom Moore (born August 6, 1943) is an American theatre, television, and film director. Born in Meridian, Mississippi, Moore graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1961 and then earned a BA in Theatre from Purdue University in 1965, where he received the alumni distinction as both an Old Master and a Purdue Legacy. Moore began his career in the late 1960s, directing '' Loot'' at Brandeis University and ''Oh, What a Lovely War!'' at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His first major break came in 1972, when he directed the original Broadway production of '' Grease'', which eventually ran for 3,388 performances. His next project, the nostalgic World War II musical ''Over Here!'', starred Maxene and Patty Andrews and featured newcomers John Travolta, Marilu Henner, Treat Williams, and Ann Reinking in supporting roles; Moore was nominated for the 1974 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical. The 81st Scripps National Spelling Bee finals took place on May 30, 2008. Competition Two hundred eighty-eight champion spellers competed in the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., a new record. Most of the spellers were from the United States, with a small showing from other locations such as Ghana, Jamaica, New Zealand, and South Korea. Twenty-two were Canadian. Wikipedian Emily Temple-Wood was one of the competitors. The Scripps National Spelling Bee (formerly the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee and commonly called the National Spelling Bee) is an annual spelling bee held in the United States. The competition began in 1925, and was initially organized by ''The Courier-Journal'' of Louisville, Kentucky, until the Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company (now the E. W. Scripps Company) assumed sponsorship in 1941. Every speller in the competition has previously participated in a local spelling bee, usually organized by a local newspaper. The first champion was Frank Neuhauser of Louisville, who beat eight other finalists to win the inaugural competition. He was honored with a parade in his hometown, where and when he was presented with bouquets of gladioli in commemoration of the winning word "gladiolus", and returned to the Bee a number of times as a guest of honor. Gavin Mikhail (born March 26, 1975) is an American composer, pianist and singer-songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. The winner of the 2007 "Lay It Down and Mix It Up in the UK" fan-vote contest, he has released more than 30 albums and singles independently. Mikhail also composed the piano soundtrack to Ruta Sepetys' ''New York Times'' bestseller ''Between Shades of Gray'' which was released in 2011. Thomas F. Kelly (born April 16, 1952) is an American musician, best known for his songwriting partnership with Billy Steinberg. Steinberg and Kelly co-wrote numerous hit songs for popular music artists, including five number-one singles on the ''Billboard'' Top 100 chart in the 1980s. Early life Originally from Indiana, Kelly lived in Effingham, Illinois from 1963 to 1966, before moving back to West Lafayette, Indiana where he graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1967. Kelly attended Eastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Purdue University, but dropped out of college to pursue his music career. George Karlaftis
George Karlaftis ( el, Γιώργος Ματθαίου Καρλάφτης; ; born 3 April 2001) is a Greek-born professional American football defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL).
