West Kootenay Roller Derby
West Kootenay Roller Derby (WKRD) is a roller derby league based in The Kootenays region of British Columbia in Canada. Co-founded in 2009 as the West Kootenay Women's Roller Derby League (WKWRDL) by Shelly "Hoar Frost" Grice-Gold, the league consists of five house teams, and an all-star travel team which competes against teams from other leagues for national standings. The league has skaters from Castlegar, Fruitvale, Kaslo, Nakusp, Nelson, New Denver, Rossland, Salmo, Slocan City, Trail and Ymir. Different teams represent the various communities; for example, the Dam City Rollers are linked to Castlegar, the Killjoys to Nelson, and the Babes of Brutality to Salmo. By mid-2011, the two Nelson teams had a total of more than forty skaters. The Kootenays
The Kootenays or Kootenay ( ) is a region of southeastern British Columbia. It takes its name from the Kootenay River, which in turn was named for the Kutenai First Nations people. Boundaries The Kootenays are more or less defined by the Kootenay Land District, though some variation exists in terms of what areas are or are not a part. Salmo, British Columbia
Salmo is in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The village municipality is mostly on the north side of Erie Creek at the confluence with the Salmo River. The place lies largely east of the junction of BC Highway 3 (about southeast of Castlegar), and BC Highway 6 (about south of Nelson, and north of the US border). Name origin Originally, the name was either Laprairie or Salmon City, derived from the initial name of the river that dated from around 1860. Prior to the downstream damming of the Columbia River from the 1930s, salmon frequented this tributary. In 1893, the settlement name became Salmon or Salmon Siding. Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice
The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice is the program affiliate of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In operation from 2009 until early 2019, the Apprentice Program served to onboard new member leagues into the WFTDA. In February 2019, the WFTDA announced it was retiring the program, to be replaced with a new "New Member Program" in the near future. History In July 2009, the WFTDA announced its new apprentice program for aspiring member leagues that replaced its traditional membership application process. The program is designed to act as a "WFTDA 101" tutorial, and will match new leagues with an established WFTDA mentor, who will guide the apprentice through the processes and requirements necessary to becoming a full member. The Roller Derby World Cup is an international women's roller derby tournament formerly organized by ''Blood & Thunder magazine'', and currently organized by the Roller Derby World Cup Committee. Teams of amateur skaters from around the world compete for their respective nations. History The inaugural 2011 Roller Derby World Cup was hosted by Toronto Roller Derby, and was held December 1 through 4, 2011, at The Bunker at Downsview Park in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was won by Team USA, who beat Team Canada by a score of 336 points to 33 in the final. Live online coverage of the event was broadcast on the '' Derby News Network''. Team Canada (roller Derby)
Team Canada represents Canada in women's international roller derby. The current team was first formed to compete at the 2011 Roller Derby World Cup, and finished the tournament in second place to Team USA, losing the final 336 points to 33. Team Canada has finished in the top four at each Roller Derby World Cup thus far. A previous Team Canada toured England and Scotland in June 2008. Ymir is an unincorporated community in the Selkirk Mountains in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Ymir is located where the Salmo River meets Quartz Creek, and Ymir Creek. The Village of Slocan is in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former steamboat landing and ferry terminal is at the mouth of Springer Creek, at the foot of Slocan Lake. Rossland, British Columbia
Rossland is in the West Kootenay region of south central British Columbia.
